Dear Durham University,

Please can you tell me if trigger warnings for graphic/potentially upsetting content are giving to students on English literature courses before lectures/exams?

If so, can you tell me the wordings of the warnings and to which books/plays etc they are attached?

Eg: Titus Andronicus contains references to rape.

Yours faithfully,

Mark Spaven

Dear Mr Spaven

Thank you for your request for information from Durham University.
Colleagues have provided the information below in response to your
questions.

Please can you tell me if trigger warnings for graphic/potentially
upsetting content are giving to students on English literature courses
before lectures/exams?

If so, can you tell me the wordings of the warnings and to which
books/plays etc they are attached?

The provision of 'trigger warnings', or advice in relation to the
presentation and discussion of distressing material in educational
settings, is a matter dealt with at a local level (in particular
tutorials, seminars, lectures) through the judgment of individual academic
staff in the Department of English Studies. Such advice will be issued
when appropriate, for a variety of reasons, and is formulated as such
occasions require rather than from standard wording. The content of the
curriculum (authors, texts, modules) changes every academic year, and is
subject to an annual review of taught provision. In the context of
operational flexibility and dynamism, the Department does not use a set
list of texts that fall in this category.

If you are dissatisfied with the University’s response to your freedom of
information request, you can ask us to internally review our handling of
your request, including the application of any exemptions applied.  To do
this, please email [1][Durham University request email] or write to:
