Play pedagogy/ play based learning in primary schools

D. Brisbane made this Rhyddid Gwybodaeth request to South Ayrshire Council

Automatic anti-spam measures are in place for this older request. Please let us know if a further response is expected or if you are having trouble responding.

We're waiting for D. Brisbane to read a recent response and update the status.

Dear South Ayrshire Council,

Please accept this as a Freedom of Information request.

Please could you provide the following information:

1. How many primary schools in the authority are currently (academic year 2021-2022) delivering play pedagogy in primary one?

2. How many primary schools in the authority are currently (academic year 2021-2022) delivering play pedagogy in primary two?

In the event of lack of clarity of what play pedagogy is, the Scottish Government has stated that children should access play based learning in primary 1 and 2. Here is an example of what was said:

"Play encompasses children's behaviour which is freely chosen, personally directed and intrinsically motivated. It is performed for no external goal or reward and is a fundamental and integral part of healthy development which seeks to improve play experiences for all children." ( Scottish Government, 2013b, p.14)

https://www.gov.scot/publications/play-s...

3. How many in total do you expect to use a play pedagogy approach in primary one in the next academic year (2022-2023)?

4. How many primary schools in the authority are currently (academic year 2021-2022) delivering outdoor learning as part of every day learning?

Thank you

Yours faithfully,

D. Brisbane

1 Atodiad

Good afternoon

I refer to previous correspondence seeking an Internal Review of the
Council's handling of you recent information request, our reference
FOI/2021/11092.  Specifically, I have noted the Council failed to provide
a response to two questions asked within your original request, i.e.

Q3.      How many in total do you expect to use a play pedagogy approach
in primary one in the next academic year (2022-2023)?

Q4.      How many primary schools in the authority are currently (academic
year 2021-2022) delivering outdoor learning as part of every-day learning?

Upon Review I have established the failure to provide this information to
you was a result of an administration error, resulting in the Education
Service not being provided with these two questions at the time of your
original request.  This resulted in the Council failing to meet our
obligations under Section 1 of FOISA (General Entitlement).  On that basis
I uphold that the Council failed to meet Section 1 of FOISA. This
information is now provided below, and I would apologise for any
inconvenience caused.

Q3.      How many in total do you expect to use a play pedagogy approach
in primary one in the next academic year (2022-2023)?

This information is not specifically recorded by the Council.
However the Education service has confirmed that In session 2022-2023 they
expect all of our primary one classes to be developing play
pedagogy to varying degrees.  Details of the Council's School Rolls area
available at:  [1]https://beta.south-ayrshire.gov.uk/schools

Q4.      How many primary schools in the authority are currently (academic
year 2021-2022) delivering outdoor learning as part of every-day learning?

The Education service has confirmed that this information is
not specifically recorded.  On that basis, paragraph acts as the required
notice under Section 17 of FOISA.

Should you continue to remain dissatisfied with the Council’s handling of
your information request you can seek an independent investigation from
the Scottish Information Commissioner, and details of how to do this are
attached for your ease of reference.

Regards

Deborah McVey
