Paper costs and carbon footprint reduction targets

The request was successful.

Dear Caerphilly County Borough Council,

I am currently compiling data on the cost to both the environment and expenditure on the use of paper.

I would be grateful if you can give me information on the following:

1) The total amount of reams of paper used by the authority in the last 12 months
2) The amount of expenditure on printing, photocopying, and consumables for internal purposes. We are not interested in the amount of expenditure for printing of publications for external use.
3) The amount of recycling of paper from your offices.
4) Does the local authority have a target to reduce the use of paper - if so what is the current progress?
5) Does the local authority have a target to reduce their carbon footprint - if so what is the current progress?

Yours faithfully,

A R Shaw

Dear A Shaw

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2000 - INFORMATION REQUEST

Thank you for your request for information received on 10^th October 2017.
We have considered your request and enclose the following information -

1) The total amount of reams of paper used by the authority in the last 12
months
IT Department: 21,637 reams
Print Unit: 1,600 reams
(80gsm recycled white)

2) The amount of expenditure on printing, photocopying, and consumables
for internal purposes. We are not interested in the amount of expenditure
for printing of publications for external use.

IT Department:

MFP Purchase / Software & Hardware Maintenance / Warranty       £157,369.08
Toner, Fusers, Maintenance Kits                          £160,617.01
Paper                                                                           £53,057.96
£371,044.05

Print Unit:
£174,441.14

3) The amount of recycling of paper from your offices.
70.42 tonnes of paper waste (1^st October 2016 to 11^th October 2017)

4) Does the local authority have a target to reduce the use of paper - if
so what is the current progress?
Over the last 10 years the amount of paper discarded has reduced by a
quarter as a result of the implementation of more resourceful office
printing protocols.  Refinements in information technology and centralised
printing hubs has helped to reduce the amount of waste paper in the
Council's offices.

5) Does the local authority have a target to reduce their carbon footprint
- if so what is the current progress?
The Carbon Reduction Strategy aims to reduce carbon emissions by 45%.
This is based on emission levels from 2007/08.  The strategy expires in
2018/19.

The raw metered utility data indicates that there has been an 11.6%
reduction in carbon emissions, however this data has not been adjusted to
account for weather variations.
