Paper costs and carbon footprint reduction targets

The request was successful.

Dear St Edmundsbury Borough Council,
I am currently compiling data on the cost to both the environment and expenditure on the use of paper.

I would be grateful if you can give me information on the following:

1) The total amount of reams of paper used by the authority in the last 12 months
2) The amount of expenditure on printing, photocopying, and consumables for internal purposes. We are not interested in the amount of expenditure for printing of publications for external use.
3) The amount of recycling of paper from your offices.
4) Does the local authority have a target to reduce the use of paper - if so what is the current progress?
5) Does the local authority have a target to reduce their carbon footprint - if so what is the current progress?

Yours faithfully,

A R Shaw

I refer to your Freedom of Information request detailed below.
As you may be aware, St Edmundsbury Borough Council and Forest Heath
District Council are working together under the banner West Suffolk to
provide shared services across the boundaries of both authorities.  This
response is sent on behalf of the West Suffolk Councils.

Response

1) The total amount of reams of paper used by the authority in the last 12
months -

This figure includes all West Suffolk Council offices and these devices
are used by multiple agencies in all of these building's - from 1/10/16 to
31/10/17 we used 4,615 reams of A4 and 135 reams of A5 paper.

2) The amount of expenditure on printing, photocopying, and consumables
for internal purposes. We are not interested in the amount of expenditure
for printing of publications for external use -

£48,520.91 - The report covers 01/05/16 – 30/04/17 as this is when the new
Equitrac system was installed and only this data is available from this
point onwards so we have summarised an entire year. This figure includes
all West Suffolk Council offices and these devices are used by multiple
agencies in all of these buildings.

3) The amount of recycling of paper from your offices -

This information is not available.

4) Does the local authority have a target to reduce the use of paper - if
so what is the current progress?

[1]https://www.westsuffolk.gov.uk/environme...

5) Does the local authority have a target to reduce their carbon
footprint - if so what is the current progress?

The current CO2 reduction target was aligned to that adopted by Suffolk
Climate Change Partnership, to which both councils are partners. The
Partnership’s new target of a reduction in absolute carbon emissions of
35% on 2010 levels by 2025 and 75% by 2050, was adopted in March 2017 and
is generally in line with the UK Climate Change Act 2008. In response to
this change and as part of the review of the current West Suffolk
Sustainability Strategy, the councils are reviewing the current CO2
emissions reduction target. Adopting the county-wide target would be
consistent with reductions needed to meet the Paris Climate Change
Agreement: to limit global warming to below 2°C.

If you are unhappy with this response you may request an internal review
of this matter via the Council’s corporate complaints procedure.

Dear Sir / Madam

I refer to your correspondence dated 15 February 2018 when you requested
information for Forest Heath District Council (FHDC) and St Edmundsbury
Borough Council (SEBC):

RESPONSE:

1) The total amount of reams of paper used by the authority in the last 12
months

01/10/16 to 31/10/17 4,615 reams of A4 and 135 reams of A5 paper.

2) The amount of expenditure on printing, photocopying, and consumables
for internal purposes. We are not interested in the amount of expenditure
for printing of publications for external use.

This report is run from when our Equitrac system was installed, so for
01/05/16 – 30/04/17 the total figure is £48,520.91.

Nb. for 1) and 2) please note that the buildings are used by multiple

3) The amount of recycling of paper from your offices.

This information is not available

4) Does the local authority have a target to reduce the use of paper - if

5) Does the local authority have a target to reduce their carbon footprint
- if so what is the current progress?

We are currently reviewing our CO2 reduction target.  The current CO2
reduction target was aligned to that adopted by Suffolk Climate Change
Partnership, to which both FHDC and SEBC are partners. The Partnership’s
new target of a reduction in absolute carbon emissions of 35% on 2010
levels by 2025 and 75% by 2050, was adopted in March 2017 and is generally
in line with the UK Climate Change Act 2008.  In response to this change
and as part of the review of the current West Suffolk Sustainability
Strategy, the councils are reviewing the current CO2 emissions reduction
target.  Adopting the county-wide target would be consistent with
reductions needed to meet the Paris Climate Change Agreement: to limit
global warming to below 2°C.

If you are unhappy with this response you may request an internal review
of this matter via the Council’s corporate complaints procedure.
