Paper costs and carbon footprint reduction targets

We're waiting for A R Shaw to read a recent response and update the status.

Dear Shropshire Council,

I am currently compiling data on the cost to both the environment and expenditure on the use of paper.

I would be grateful if you can give me information on the following:

1) The total amount of reams of paper used by the authority in the last 12 months
2) The amount of expenditure on printing, photocopying, and consumables for internal purposes. We are not interested in the amount of expenditure for printing of publications for external use.
3) The amount of recycling of paper from your offices.
4) Does the local authority have a target to reduce the use of paper - if so what is the current progress?
5) Does the local authority have a target to reduce their carbon footprint - if so what is the current progress?

Yours faithfully,

A R Shaw

Many thanks for your enquiry our response is detailed below,

1) The total amount of reams of paper used by the authority in the last 12
months

9,690 A4 reams of paper. Of which 1,450 we can confirm the supplier has
provided rainforest alliance certified paper with FFC accreditation and is
a mixed paper from responsible sources (FFC C010014)

2) The amount of expenditure on printing, photocopying, and consumables
for internal purposes. We are not interested in the amount of expenditure
for printing of publications for external use.

£292,671.88

3) The amount of recycling of paper from your offices.

This information is not held by Shropshire Council

4) Does the local authority have a target to reduce the use of paper - if
so what is the current progress?

As part of Shropshire Council’s Digital Transformation Programme (DTP) we
are working to significantly reduce our print requirements. Very broadly,
the DTP will give staff the tools they need to work digitally from
anywhere, both in terms of infrastructure and equipment, alongside new
software that enables this change. We have also installed a pull-print
solution that allows us to manage staff printing habits at a more granular
level, even applying rules to prevent people printing if appropriate.

5) Does the local authority have a target to reduce their carbon footprint
- if so what is the current progress?

We have a target to reduce the carbon emission (CO2e) on its operations
and services by 45% by 2023 (with 2008 as the baseline).  We have achieved
~30% reduction so far.
