Paper costs and carbon footprint reduction targets

Mid Ulster District Council did not have the information requested.

Dear Mid Ulster District Council,

I am currently compiling data on the cost to both the environment and expenditure on the use of paper.

I would be grateful if you can give me information on the following:

1) The total amount of reams of paper used by the authority in the last 12 months
2) The amount of expenditure on printing, photocopying, and consumables for internal purposes. We are not interested in the amount of expenditure for printing of publications for external use.
3) The amount of recycling of paper from your offices.
4) Does the local authority have a target to reduce the use of paper - if so what is the current progress?
5) Does the local authority have a target to reduce their carbon footprint - if so what is the current progress?

Yours faithfully,

A R Shaw

Philip Moffett, Mid Ulster District Council

Dear A R Shaw
Thank you for your information request submitted with Mid Ulster District
Council on 15/01/2018 under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the Act)
for information on expenditure on paper.

The Council has considered your request and responds to your queries
therein as detailed below.

1) The total amount of reams of paper used by the authority in the last 12
months

Response:  670

2) The amount of expenditure on printing, photocopying, and consumables
for internal purposes. We are not interested in the amount of expenditure
for printing of publications for external use.

Response: The Council confirms that it does not separately record the
amount of paper used for internal purposes.  Information is not held.

3) The amount of recycling of paper from your offices.

Response: The council confirms that this information is not
maintained and held.

4) Does the local authority have a target to reduce the use of paper - if
so what is the current progress?

Response: The council confirms that it does not have a specific target.
It does however, have measures in place to reduce paper usage which
includes for example council meeting packs now being created and
sent electronically to councillors for all meetings, all photocopiers
being set as default to double sided, black and white and the phasing out
of office based printers with a move to pooled photocopiers for all staff.

5) Does the local authority have a target to reduce their carbon footprint
- if so what is the current progress?

Response: The Council confirms that it does not have a specific target in
this regard. It does however encourage the use of a number of business
practices with the overall aim of reducing carbon footprint such as for
example; the use of alternative energy sources; conference call/web-ex
meetings; cycle to work schemes, use of an electric van within its fleet.

I hope this is of assistance. However, under the Freedom of Information
Act, if you are not happy with the way in which your request has been
handled, you have the right to ask for an internal review. An internal
review should be requested within 2 months of the date of this response
and should be sent to:

Chief Executive
Mid Ulster District Council
Dungannon Office
Circular Road
DUNGANNON BT71 6DT

If you are not content with the outcome of the internal review, you can
ask the Information Commissioner for a decision as to whether the Council
has complied with its responsibilities under the Act. The Information
Commissioner can be contacted at:

The Information Commissioner’s Office
3rd Floor
14 Cromac Place
BELFAST BT7 2JB
If I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact
me.
Regards
Philip
