Dear Stephen

I am writing in response to your request for information under the terms
of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Ref No FOI/18/066.

Firstly, please accept my apologies for the slight delay responding to
your request.  I hope this hasn’t caused you too much inconvenience.

Below are the details of your request and our response in blue.

Requested:

Please can you provide all available documentation regarding the adoption status of the
alleyway that lies between Devonshire Road and Lawrence Road, Chorley?

The alley runs from its junction with Carrington Road to its junction with Trinity Road.

The Council does not own the alleyway.  A search of the Land Registry website, shows that
part of the alley is included under the ownership of various adjoining properties on
Lawrence Road and Devonshire Road, with some areas unregistered- see below.

You can make your own enquiries to verify the individual ownership via the Land Registry
website should you wish to.

We have access to archived highways information which show that the alley was not
adopted.

As Lancashire County Council are responsible for highways, they may hold more up to date
information regarding the adoption status, therefore you may wish to contact Lancashire
County Council for confirmation of the up to date status of the alley adoption.

We are not aware of any planned / regular work that has been undertaken by the Council in
respect of the maintenance/tidying/cleansing.  We do however, occasional clear ups of
unadopted back alleys i.e. removing rubbish but this is following request and we have on
duty to undertake this work.

Below is a link to Lancashire County Council’s website that may be of use to you:

or submitting a request via their webform at

I hope the information provided here answers your enquiry.  If however,
you are unhappy with the outcome, or the way in which Chorley Council has
handled your request, you may wish to make an appeal.  This can be done in
writing to the Information Manager, Chorley Council, Civic Offices, Union
Street, Chorley, PR7 1AL, or by e-mail to: [4][email address]  clearly
stating your reasons for dissatisfaction.  Please quote the above
