With sincere apologies for the delay in responding to your FOI request
dated 19 February 2013.

Below is the Trust's response.

What is the legal ratio of patients per nurses.
     (A) During the day
     (b) During the night
How many geriatric patients should there be per nurse to care for.
     (A) during the day
     (B) During the night

There is no "legal ratio" for Nursing as described above.   The Trust has
followed a process to determine staffing levels during 12/13 using
professional judgement and other guidance such as that from the Royal
College of Nursing.

We are currently undertaking a process for 13/14 to review establishments
for the coming year.

Has the trust got a strong policy in place to protect patients from
patients with MRSA.

Yes there is an agreed Policy for the management of MRSA.   This is based
on National Guidance and reflects best practice.  Our MRSA rates indicate
that the Trust has a consistently strong record in the management of
infections within hospitals.  The Trust has a focus on cleanliness, hand
hygiene and other factors that we know are important to protect patients
from MRSA and other infections.

If you are unhappy with the way your request for information has been
handled you may request a review by writing to Jennie Hall, Deputy Chief
Executive Officer/Chief Nurse, South London Healthcare NHS Trust, Queen
Mary's Hospital, Frognal Avenue, Sidcup, Kent DA14 6LT, setting out your

Dear foi (SOUTH LONDON HEALTHCARE NHS TRUST),

Therefore the Trust must find it acceptable that 20 elderly patients are cared for by one senior member of staff the only one present at times no Healthcare assistants present either per 12/13 hour shift.

shifts that contain many 20+ elderly patients with highly contagious Norovirus- dementia and other serious illnesses -therefore leaving already elderly and vulnerable patients in a seriously unsafe environment and the nurse unable to keep those patients safe and the nurse at the forefront of any mistakes made through no fault of his/her own

Yours sincerely
