NORM / IGas/ Horndean permit EPR/SB3691DY/A001

Roedd y cais yn rhannol lwyddiannus.

Dear Environment Agency,

I note the permit EPR/SB3691DY/A001 was issued to IGas for the export of produced water offsite which contains naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM)
https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk...

Please can you tell me
1. What volume of NORM is produced from the Horndean site?
2. Where does the NORM come from? It was my understanding that IGas has permission to produce from the Oolite and no other strata. The Oolite should not contain NORM
3. Please can you send me a copy of notes from the TEAM LEADER Radioactive Substances Regulation (Authorised to issue such documents on behalf of the Environment Agency) on how she/he decided to issue a standard rules permit not bespoke.
4. Has the NORM been tested since the permit was issued and what is the analysis (ie what is the NORM composed of)
5. Where is the NORM from Horndean sites stored, which site is it sent to and/or where is it processed?

Many thanks for your help with this.

Yours faithfully,

Emily Mott

Dear Emily,

Please accept our apologies for the delay in providing a response to you.

Please see the below response from our technical team to your questions:

1. What volume of NORM is produced from the Horndean site?

On average, the Horndean site generates around 72 tonnes of produced water
which is contaminated with naturally occurring radioactive material every
month. In terms of radioactivity, the average is around 0.5 MBq of Radium
226 and Radium 228 generated per month.

2. Where does the NORM come from? It was my understanding that IGas has
permission to produce from the Oolite and no other strata. The Oolite
should not contain NORM and:

3. Please can you send me a copy of notes from the TEAM LEADER Radioactive
Substances Regulation (Authorised to issue such documents on behalf of the
Environment Agency) on how she/he decided to issue a standard rules permit
not bespoke.

Attached is a copy of the decision document produced when the standard
rules RSR permit was issued.

4. Has the NORM been tested since the permit was issued and what is the
analysis (ie what is the NORM composed of)

The Hordean site does not generate solid radioactive waste, therefore no
analysis has been performed. The produced water is tested on a regular
basis and the NORM contamination has remained relatively constant. The
average concentration of radioactive substances are as follows:

  Po-210 Pb-210 Ra-226 Ra-228
Measured value (Becquerel’s per litre) 6.5 5.9 6.0 1.5

5. Where is the NORM from Horndean sites stored, which site is it sent to
and/or where is it processed?

Produced water is stored in an above ground tank. It is then transferred
to one of a number of Island Gas Limited sites in the area that hold a
bespoke RSR environmental permit, which permits the import of radioactive
waste. It is then reinjected back into the rock formation at the disposal
site. Although the standard rules permit allows for the operation, no
produced water is reinjected at the Horndean site and as mentioned
previously, no solid radioactive waste is produced.
