Regarding your request for information under the Freedom of Information
Act 2000: Ref: foi/515/09
"We would like to know how much money is
allocated yearly for the maintenance of Norfolk Sq.
Brighton. What
has this money been spent on during the past three
years."
Please find set out below the information in response to the above
request:
"Highways Basic Maintenance do not allocate sums of money to specific
streets. Inspections are carried out routinely and/or as a result of
complaints, with specific criteria in mind and any highway safety defects
found are actioned for repairs based on these criteria.
Over the last three years the expenditure for Norfolk Square is broken
down as listed below.
Carriageway: £242.37
Footways and Kerbing: 768.00
Street Furniture: £958.60
Emergency works: £86.48
Total: £1755.45
Cityclean or Cityparks budgets cover the whole city and are not broken
down to specific sites. This is because staff, and thus costs, will cover
a wide ranging area and variety of duties. So for example, the clearance
of litter is undertaken by staff in a vehicle who cover a number of
squares, and other green spaces and thus it is not possible to break the
costs down to smaller levels"

Dear Freedom Of Information,
The original no. is 515/09
The reply sent to us gave details of the expenditure in the roads around the Square. What we need to know is how much money has been spent in what are the Public Gardens in the centre of the Square.
1. The amount of money allocated each year.
2. What has this money been spent on during the past three years.
3. Why is there no money to replace the broken fence.
Thanks
EBRA
Yours sincerely,
Mr. W. Cowell

Dear Freedom Of Information,
I understand what you are saying.
However there must be record of what is done (work) in Norfolk Sq Garden! How else do the workers justify their working day?
It would seem that the neglect we see in Norfolk Sq is because of the lack of supervision, record keeping and budgeting.
The Broken Fence is a good example. A previous complaint showed that despite is being reported no one took responsibility for its repair.
Now we have been told that there is no money to repair it. Why is there no money?
City Clean do NOT do a good job in the Square. Last year in October our group did a clean up and we recovered from the bushes and flower beds three sacks of bottles, cans and needles. Again this October we will do our annual clear up and expect to find as much again. City clean only empty the bins no one clears the Garden (flower beds and bushes) of rubbish.
Thanks
Yours sincerely,
Mr. W. Cowell
