Non-IB Canadian PPE Undergraduate Admission Statistics

We're waiting for Alice Jjiang to read a recent response and update the status.

Dear University College London,

I would like to request the following information formatted in a spreadsheet for the year 2018 and 2019 cycle of applicants.

1) Number of non-IB Canadian PPE applicants
2) Number of short-listed non-IB Canadian PPE applicants
3) Number of accepted or deferred entry non-IB Canadian PPE applicants
4) TSA section 1 and section 2 scores for all non-IB Canadian PPE applicants (please specify which applicants have been shortlisted/accepted/deferred entry)
5) Interview scores for all non-IB Canadian PPE applicants (please specify which applicants have been accepted/deferred entry)
6) Average grade 11 and 12 marks for all non-IB Canadian PPE applicants (please specify which applicants have been shortlisted/accepted/deferred entry)
- since the non-IB Canadian version of marks is a percentage from 0-100% found on an applicant's transcript next to the corresponding course code (#3 in a course code indicates a grade 11 course and a #4 in a course code indicates a grade 12 course, e.x. ENG3U is grade 11 English and SPH4U is grade 12 physics), please average the individual grade 11 and grade 12 marks of each non-IB Canadian applicant for the years 2018 and 2019. Here is an example of what I am looking for,

2018 Cycle
Applicant 1
Grade 11 - 94.6
Grade 12 - 93.2

Lastly, to clarify, by "Canadian" student, I mean to say Canadian domiciled student.

Your help is much appreciated.

Yours faithfully,
Alice Jjiang

Finance.FOI Requests, University College London

Dear Ms Jijiang,

Thank you for your request.

Can you please clarify the following:

• What is PPE?
• What do you mean by “short-listed”? Is this the same as got an offer? (For UG degrees applicants apply, universities then make offers to some of the applicants (these offers are usually conditional on the applicant achieving certain grades, but they could be unconditional where the applicant already has the required qualifications to enter the programme)
• By accepted, do you mean that the applicant has accepted the offer? Or do you mean that the applicant has become a student?

Kind regards,

Dear Finance.FOI Requests,

No problem, allow me to clarify.

- By PPE, I mean UCL’s UG Philosophy, Politics, and Economics BSc program
- By shortlisted, I mean students who pass the first phase of the application process and are either offered an interview or sent over questions as an overseas applicant to further assess them before bring given out offers
- By accepted, I mean that the student has been given an offer to the university, whether they accept it or not is not what I am looking for

Hope this clears everything up and I await your response eagerly.

Yours sincerely,
Alice Jjiang

For questions 4 to 6 , we do not have this information because we do not
record what applicants took for their age 18 qualification , therefore we
cannot assess whether they are International Baccalaureate or non-
International Baccalaureate.

As you can see, exact counts totalling five or less have been withheld
because these are personal data of third parties or, if linked with other
personal identifiers in the public domain, would be likely to become
personal data. This information has been withheld under section 40(2) of
the FOIA by virtue of s40 (3)(a)(i).

Section 40(2) of the FOIA allows a public authority to withhold
information under the FOIA where (i) the requested information is
personal data relating to someone other than the requester and (ii) its
disclosure would breach any of the data protection principles. In this
case we believe that the requested information could relate to and
identify  individuals and would be considered as their personal data. The
disclosure of this personal data would not be within the reasonable
expectations of the individuals concerned and it would be unfair to do so;
this therefore breaches the first data protection principle.

It is for these reasons that this information is exempt under section
40(2) of the Act.

As the section 40(2) exemption is an absolute one, there is no need to
conduct a public interest test.
