NHS Agency Spend Ranking 2016/17

The request was successful.

Dear NHS Improvement,

I requested information via the FOI act on the 17th of July, linked below. NHS Improvement has not acknowledged or responded to this request, which is now overdue. Legally and under all circumstances, the organisation should have provided a response by now.

Please provide a list of all NHS trusts, ranked based on agency spend as a percentage of gross pay at Q4 2016/17.

Yours faithfully,

Ellis Sausman

FOI (NHS IMPROVEMENT - T1520), NHS Improvement

Dear Ellis Sausman

Thank you for your emails dated 17 July and 20 July 2017, following from
our response to your previous Freedom of Information Act request on 17
July 2017. Your request was for a “full list of NHS Trusts, ranked based
on agency spend as a % of gross pay at Q4”.

NHS Improvement does not currently hold a full list of NHS Trusts, ranked
based on agency spend as a percentage of gross pay for Q4 2016/17. We do
hold the data which would enable such a list to be created, however we
have not produced that material. However, we have decided to put this
information together for you in response to your request. We are currently
producing the requested list and we intend to provide this to you by 24th
August 2017.

Kind regards

NHS Improvement

Dear FOI (NHS IMPROVEMENT - T1520),

Please provide the agency league performance tables for Q3 2016/17. This is a list of trusts, ranked based on agency spend as a percentage of total staff costs, where 1 represents the lowest agency spend.

Please provide a similar table for bank spend as a percentage of total staff costs, where 1 represents the lowest bank spend.

Yours sincerely,

Ellis Sausman

Dear FOI (NHS IMPROVEMENT - T1520),

On the 27 November NHSI helpful provided me with agency league tables for Q1 and Q2 2017/18 (please see email trail attached to this FOI). I would like to thank you for sending this data, and to clarify a few points.

Firstly, please can someone clarify how the league tables are ordered? Does 1 represent the lowest agency spend as a % of gross pay for both sets of data?

Secondly, please can you compare the Q1 and Q2 data to confirm that it is correct? I am concerned that there has been an error as the ranking is highly irregular. Some examples of the many irregularities are below:

1) Liverpool Women'S NHS Foundation Trust moves from rank 44 to 233
2) East Of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust moves from rank 48 to 221
3) Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust moves from 39 to 210

Thank you for taking the time to look into this.

Yours sincerely,

Ellis Sausman
