IMPFOI, Imperial College London

Dear Mr Appleton,

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request. Please find below the College's response to your questions.

“Upload the past papers, and if possible the solutions between the academic years of 2014 - 2021; for the examination module: Project Evaluation – Metals and Energy Project Appraisal and Finance, Resource Estimation and Mining Engineering.”

Section 43(2) of the Freedom of Information Act exempts information the disclosure of which would, or would be likely to, prejudice the commercial interests of any person. Imperial College operates in a highly competitive global market, aiming to attract and recruit the most able students from the UK and around the world. Imperial College has built a reputation as one of the top academic institutions in the world; our courses are well renowned in the higher education sphere and more widely with employers and researchers. The College has invested heavily in expert staff time and money to create teaching, learning and assessment materials for its degree courses, which are available to enrolled students. Disclosure of these materials to the world at large would place the College at a commercial and competitive disadvantage.

As Section 43 is a qualified exemption, we have also considered whether the public interest would favour disclosure in this case, despite the factors mentioned above. The College’s view is that protecting the ability of the College to operate effectively within a competitive global market, by not disclosing information that competitors could use to its commercial disadvantage, outweighs any public interest arguments in favour of disclosure.

Kind regards,

Freedom of Information Team
Imperial College London
