Dear _Enquiries,

If there is some doubt over which type of operations I am referring to in terms of classification; it would be best that you explicitly state the types of operation which the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime are involved in, from which I can then identify.

By going into specific aspects of what Information Operations are and what they entail; I run the risk of ruling out the information sought because the definition may have evolved or your understanding of it may be in some way different to mine.

I recommend consultation with your seniors and some research on the subject. Their are numerous parties who train police on Info Ops and a key related body would be Targeting and Information Operations (TIO) based at Whitehall in London.(http://www.powerbase.info/index.php/Targ...)

'Your area' is your police area. The following link may be dated but it will give you the idea:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Police_area

The targets within an Information Operation is/are the person(s) who are the target of that operation.

'All for date of writing' means I want to know what the answers to the questions are for 30th October (as opposed to the date that you respond or any other date).

Hopefully this guides you to clearing things up.

Thanks for the prompt response.

Yours sincerely,

Donnie Mackenzie

_Enquiries, Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime

Dear Donnie Mackenzie

Thank you for your email dated 30 October 2012.

The following definition of Information Operations is at: http://www.carlisle.army.mil/DIME/docume...

"Information operations (IO) encompass attacking adversary command and control
(C2) systems (offensive IO) while protecting friendly C2 systems from adversary
disruption (defensive IO). Effective IO combines the effects of offensive and defensive
IO to produce information superiority at decisive points."

The Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) does not undertake activities of this kind. MOPAC is not a Police Force. MOPAC's priorities are to:

- Hold the Metropolitan Police to account and deliver the Mayor’s manifesto commitments and expectations.
- Challenge the Metropolitan Police and other criminal justice agencies to deliver value for money for the taxpayer and meet the challenge of service delivery with fewer resources in the years ahead.
- Ensure that all of London’s public service agencies work together and with communities to prevent crime, seek swift and sure justice for victims, and reduce re-offending.

You can read more about what MOPAC does at: http://www.london.gov.uk/priorities/poli...

Through MOPAC the Mayor and Deputy Mayor are directly accountable for police performance in the capital, setting the Metropolitan Police’s strategic direction and allocating resources.

Operational policing within the London metropolitan area remains the responsibility of the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Bernard Hogan-Howe, who is the head of the Metropolitan Police. It is possible that the Metropolitan Police may carry out operations that could be described as Information Operations.

You can send a Freedom of Information request to the Metropolitan Police by clicking on this link:

and completing the form.
