I refer to your request for information under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 (FOISA) dated 7 March, 2017 and my subsequent acknowledgement. On reviewing your request further it is a bit unclear exactly what information you are seeking. This email is being sent as part of our duty to provide advice and assistance outlining the clarification needed from yourself to enable this to be taken forward by the University.
The FOISA provides a right of access to recorded information as opposed to copies of documentation. One of the requirements of a request under the FOISA is that the information being sought is described. It is unclear from the wording of your request what information it is you are seeking. While you make reference to the format (handbooks, booklets, information packs) you believe information will be held, for your request to be considered valid you need to specify what information you are interested in. For example, are you looking for the reading list for a particular module?
At this stage, I would also like to highlight that by framing a request in such a wide-ranging manner, there is a risk that the data retrieval exercise needed will be so extensive that the request is unmanageable and ultimately may be refused on the grounds of excessive cost. To illustrate the position, the School of International Relations has approximately 40 modules in semester 1 of the current academic year. Taking that as an average the scope of your request could potentially involve the collation of information from 800 module handbooks, booklets etc. You may therefore wish to consider if the scope of your enquiry can be narrowed any – can you specify modules of particular interest for instance and reduce the reporting period for example?
This request for additional information is made under Section 1(3) of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002. Please note that under Section 10(1)(b) of the Act, the University has 20 working days after receipt of the additional information by the University in which to comply with your request.
Your request will therefore be held pending until I hear from you further.
