Mobile Phones in Prisons

The request was successful.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Please tell me how many mobile phones were found in British Prisons during 2008 - or if those figures aren't available then the figures for 2007.

Having accessed a mobile phone; what means would be available to the prisoner to charge the telephone in his cell?

Yours faithfully,

Paul W Sullivan

You would have thought that there would be a central point of information on breaches of prison security. Given that the fear of mobile phones has caused many problems for prisoners and visitors to prisons on could ask; 'How can they keep issueing press releases about mobile phones getting into jail and increase harrassment for visitors to prisons when they don't seem to know the extent of the problem and, therefore, how the phones are entering prisons (if they really are) and whether it is visitors (very difficult for them to do) or staff (very easy)'?
