Thank you for your email in which you requested information under the Freedom of Information Act.

Metro, as an electrically propelled light rapid transport system does not directly impact upon local air pollution due to the fact that we do not generate our own energy. This is done upstream on behalf of consumers by the major energy providers at their large power generation stations.

Nexus does however use large quantities of electrical energy to propel the trains. This usage is monitored and analysed every 4 weeks with associated internal reports. This usage in turn is transposed into equivalent tonnes CO2 using annual conversion factors provided by DEFRA (these change annually hence the variations noticeable when viewing HV against CO2). The table below provides the previous 4 years of High Voltage Energy Consumption within Metro. The difference between total and traction HV is what is consumed by the sub-systems (radio, CCTV etc.) and also to provide power to larger sub-surface stations.
