Our response to your request for information dated 8 October 2020 is
Please note that the University changed its system for recording use of
its mental health services in academic year 2016/17. Therefore, to provide
you with the number of students who have sought help through our mental
health services for academic years 2016/17 and 2015/16, we would have to
review a large number of student records of those who accessed the
Wellbeing services and extract the number of students who accessed the
services for mental health purposes. Section 12(1) of the Freedom of
Information Act makes provision for public authorities to refuse requests
for information where the cost of dealing with them would exceed the
appropriate limit set by The Freedom of Information and Data Protection
(Appropriate Limit and Fees) Regulations 2004 (Statutory Instrument 2004
No. 3244). For higher education bodies this limit is set at £450, which
represents the estimated cost of one person spending 18 hours in
determining whether the University holds the information, locating,
retrieving and extracting the information. We are unable to estimate
exactly how long it would take to determine appropriate material, locate,
retrieve and extract the information requested, however, this is likely to
be well in excess of 18 hours. Therefore, under Section 12(1) your
request will not be processed further.
In line with our duty to provide advice and assistance under Section 16 of
the Act, please note that we are able to extract number of students that
accessed mental health support from 2017/18 onwards .You may therefore
wish to consider reforming or narrowing your request so that we can assist
you within the cost limit. Please note that a narrower request of this
kind would be considered as a new request. Please note that for question
2, the University does not record the reason for students suspending their
students by exact medical reasons; we can therefore only provide you with
the data for students who withdrew from their studies due to health
reasons, which includes both physical and mental health reasons.
If you are dissatisfied with the handling of your request, you have the
right to ask for an internal review. Internal review requests should be
submitted within 40 working days from the date of our response to your
original request and should be addressed to the University Secretary,
University of Huddersfield, Queensgate, Huddersfield HD1 3DH or by email
to [University of Huddersfield request email].
