InfoRequest, Cardiff University

Dear Katie

I am writing in response to your Freedom of Information request dated
28/08/18 in which you requested information regarding the MBA course.

For ease of reference, I have reproduced your questions below and set out
our corresponding responses.

1. Total MBA Budget per year, per course e.g. full
time/part-time/flexible/executive

The School’s financial model does not consider its taught programmes as
units of analysis for budget setting.

The only budget allocated to programmes within the Business School are
modest (compared to the overall budget for the School) programme non-staff
budget for activities such as guest lectures, trips, receptions etc.

Academic staff are allocated teaching on programmes based on their
knowledge and experience through the School’s discipline based section
academic staff management structure. No internal financial transfers are
made - this is instead managed through the University’s Workload
Allocation Model which records and balances workload, including teaching
duties, for its academic staff.

As such, the University does not hold the information requested.

1.1  If possible how much of this is spent on teaching, overseas trips and
scholarships.

As above, the School does not calculate its expenditure on a programme
basis aside from a modest programme non-staff budget.

There are no overseas trips on any of the School’s MBA programmes.

There are no School level scholarships for its MBA programmes. Masters
Excellence Scholarships are alternatively available for all the
University’s postgraduate taught students as detailed:

https://www.cardiff.ac.uk/study/postgrad...

2. The number of non academic staff that support the above courses e.g.
recruitment staff/administration staff/ operational staff. Can this
information be provided with if they are full time, part time etc, and the
type of contact and job title

There are no dedicated support staff for the MBA programme. The Business
School has a highly centralised Professional Services support structure
and all support staff supporting the MBA have other activities and/or also
support other programmes.

There are a range of staff who support the School’s MBA programme, and
these include:

•           Postgraduate Hub Administrators

•           Postgraduate Hub Team Leader

•           Student Services Manager

•           Enhancement and Assurance Administrator

•           Enhancement and Assurance Manager

•           Student Experience Administrator

•           Student Cases Officer

•           Student Cases Administrator

•           School Manager

•           Deputy School Manager

•           Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Officer

•           Student Support Officer

•           Placements Manager

•           Careers and Employability Officer

•           Executive Education Coordinator

•           Learning Technologies Officer

•           Learning Technologies Manager

•           Facilities Manager

•           Facilities Officer

•           Receptionist

The vast majority of these are full time appointments. Staff are employed
on the full range of Grades 2-8 and are either on the Administrative, MPSS
or Technical pathways.

There are no recruitment staff based in the School although the School
does have an Admissions Manager who coordinates admissions activities for
all the School’s taught programmes.

The University’s student recruitment team is centrally based but again
there are no teams or staff specifically responsible for recruitment to
the MBA.

3. The number of academic staff that teach on the programme with the
following information a) number of female and males, the number that have
PhD's, the number that have practical non academic experience in business.

33 staff and 2 PhD students are currently teaching across the 3 MBA
programmes. Of these, 22 are female and 13 are male.

Of the staff, 31 have PhDs and 8 have personal non-academic work
experience. It should be noted that, as a research intensive business
school, almost all of our academic staff will be engaged in research and
scholarship with external organisations in the private, public and third
sectors and they will bring this experience to their teaching activities.

4. The size of the last two years MBA student body (number of students on
each course)

Figures for the (Full Time) MBA:

Year            Participated

2016/17:            253

2017/18:            205

There are a further c. 15 students (full-time) pa on our MBA Media
Management, jointly provided with the School of Journalism, and c. 30
students (part-time) pa on our Executive MBA.

5. The number of different nationalities within the student body over the
last two years.

There have been 43 different nationalities represented on the 3 MBA
courses over the past 2 years.

6. The female to male ratio for students in the last two years.

45% female, 55% male taking the last 2 years’ cohorts combined across all
3 MBAs and calculating ratio by student headcount.
