Roedd y cais yn rhannol lwyddiannus.

Dear University of Leeds,

I am currently looking at studying an MBA however with so much choice within the market I would like to know some more background and operational information which is not available on all the Universities website I am look at.

I would like to know the following information

1. Total MBA Budget per year, per course e.g. full time/part-time/flexible/executive
1.1 If possible how much of this is spent on teaching, overseas trips and scholarships.
2. The number of none academic staff that support the above courses e.g. recruitment staff/administration staff/ operational staff. Can this information be provided with if they are full time, part time etc, and the type of contact and job title
3. The number of academic staff that teach on the programme with the following information a) number of female and males, the number that have PhD's, the number that have practical non academic experience in business.
4. The size of the last two years MBA student body (number of students on each course)
5. The number of different nationalities within the student body over the last two years.
6. The female to male ratio for students in the last two years.

If calcification is required please let me know. I look forward to hearing from you

Yours faithfully,

Katie Kidd

Jenny Foggin,

Dear Katie,

I'm delighted that you're considering Leeds for an MBA.

We cannot, I am afraid, provide the detailed financial breakdown you have requested in question one. The way in which our internal funding model operates means that we do not record the data in these ways, and attempting to isolate it would be a significant accounting undertaking, requiring in excess of the 18 hours set out in the FoI Act as a 'reasonable time limit' to spend upon the location and retrieval of information.

In any case, we would be very concerned about releasing that level of financial detail, particularly in combination with some of the other statistical data you have requested, such as student numbers and support staff information. This kind of data would be of great value to our competitors in analysing our costs, expenditure, recruitment, etc. In an increasingly competitive recruitment market, its release could undermine our commercial position, as set out in Section 43 of the FoI Act.

There is information on our Business School website about staff who teach on the MBA programme, which you are welcome to browse: https://business.leeds.ac.uk/about-us/ou.... I cannot give a figure for other staff who support the programme since this is not really how we work - many support and professional staff work across academic programmes to support students more broadly, or to support finance, procurement, IT, etc.

Given the limitations on what can be provided, I wanted to check whether the information regarding the student boy is still of use? If it would be useful, please let me know and I will consult my colleagues regarding what information is held.

However, if you are interested in the course as a potential applicant, I strongly suggest that you contact the Leeds University Business School directly to discuss this. Admissions staff will have a great deal more information at their fingertips than I could have centrally, and will be able to bring alive everything that the Business School and the University has to offer in a way that statistics are unlikely to fully do; they will also be able to talk through your personal options with you which I am unable to do. There are contact details on the website, but let me know if you have any difficulty in getting hold of somebody to speak to.

I hope this is helpful in resolving your query. If you have any questions about this email, however, please don't hesitate to contact me.

If you are unhappy with the service you have received in relation to your request and wish to make a complaint or request a review of our decision, you should write to or email directly Mr D Wardle, Deputy Secretary, The University of Leeds, Leeds, LS2 9JT ([email address]). You should do so within three months of receiving the University’s response to your request. Further information about how the University manages Freedom of Information requests and about our complaints procedure is also available on our website (www.leeds.ac.uk).

If you are not content with the outcome of the internal review, you have the right to apply directly to the Information Commissioner for a decision. Generally, the ICO cannot make a decision unless you have exhausted the review/complaints procedure provided by the University. The Information Commissioner can be contacted at: Information Commissioner’s Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF.

Best wishes,

Jenny

Dear University of Leeds,

Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews.

I am writing to request an internal review of University of Leeds's handling of my FOI request 'MBA Information'.

I do not feel that the questions have been answered in any way that fits with an FOI response and therefore requests that my questions are answered fully or given the correct sections of the FOI Act that prevent you from releasing them. You have brushed over or around the questions, I have already spoken to your admissions team and they were not helpful hence why I asked the central team. It is your job to get the information requested from the other departments and provide an answer to my questions in full or provide a reason that you can not do this within that ACT this has not been done.

A full history of my FOI request and all correspondence is available on the Internet at this address: https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/m...

Yours faithfully,

Katie Kidd

Jenny Foggin,

Dear Katie,

I think there has been some misunderstanding. In my last email I was asking if, given the limitations on what I can provide regarding financial information (in connection with which I have cited the relevant exemptions under the FoI Act), you still wanted to receive information about student numbers, etc. My intention was to have a constructive dialogue about what you needed and what we could provide, in the spirit of the duty to provide advice and assistance set out in Section 16 of the FoI Act. I am assuming from your email below that you would still like to receive information about the student body and, as I said in my email, I am very happy to consult my colleagues about what information is held and to pass that on to you.

I had no way of being aware that you had already contacted the admissions team and that they had been unable to help you. My advice, given, again, in the spirit of trying to help people making requests, was on the basis that you were interested in the course and my experience has been that admissions staff are normally able to give valuable advice to people considering studying a programme here. Clearly this attempt to assist you further has been misconstrued and I am sorry if my email was not sufficiently clear.

I will find out what information is held regarding the student numbers and get back to you once I have some data to pass on. If you are still dissatisfied you can, of course, request a formal review. The reviews are conducted, as set out in my email, by David Wardle, Assistant Secretary, who can be contacted by email ([email address]), and whose contact details are also freely available on the University website.

Best wishes,

Jenny
