Roedd y cais yn rhannol lwyddiannus.

Dear University of Sheffield,

I am currently looking at studying an MBA however with so much choice within the market I would like to know some more background and operational information which is not available on all the Universities website I looked at.

I would like to know the following information

1.1 If possible how much of this is spent on teaching, overseas trips and scholarships.
2. The number of none academic staff that support the above courses e.g. recruitment staff/administration staff/ operational staff. Can this information be provided with if they are full time, part time etc, and the type of contact and job title
3. The number of academic staff that teach on the programme with the following information a) number of female and males, the number that have PhD's, the number that have practical non academic experience in business.
4. The size of the last two years MBA student body (number of students on each course)
5. The number of different nationalities within the student body over the last two years.

Dear Ms Kidd
I write in response to your recent Freedom of Information Request. Please
see the below responses to each part of your request:
1. Total MBA Budget per year, per course e.g. full
time/part-time/flexible/executive
1.1 If possible how much of this is spent on teaching, overseas trips and
scholarships.
This information is commercially sensitive and the University considers
that it exempt under Section 43 of the Freedom of Information Act. The
University operates in a commercially competitive environment. Releasing
this information could allow a competitor to adjust their course funding
in a strategic manner to make themselves more attractive to applicants by
either outspending the University to offer more to applicants, or
underspending to be more economical and therefore also more competitive.
This would be to the detriment of the University. Additionally some
competitor institutions, both within and outside of the UK, including
those not subject to the requirements of the UK Freedom of Information
Act, would never be required to reveal similar information.
Section 43 is a qualified exemption which is subject to the Public
Interest test:
Public interest in favour of the disclosure of the requested information
Promoting accountability, transparency and scrutiny of the University
relating to the process of admissions.
Public interest in favour of withholding the requested information
Universities operate in a commercial and competitive environment.  Unlike
many other types of public authority subject to the Freedom of Information
Act, they are in direct competition with each other.  Universities in the
UK are also in competition with overseas institutions, and certain private
service providers, neither of whom are subject to the Freedom of
Information Act. Maintenance of the exemption allows the University to
continue to operate fairly and lawfully within this competitive
environment.
Conclusion – Maintain S43 exemption
2. The number of none academic staff that support the above courses e.g.
recruitment staff/administration staff/ operational staff. Can this
information be provided with if they are full time, part time etc, and the
type of contact and job title
There are 2 dedicated MBA non academic staff. One is a full-time Programme
Manager and one is a Programme Administrator working an 85% contract. The
School has over 30 Professional Services staff, all of whom can provide
services to the MBA cohort.
3. The number of academic staff that teach on the programme with the
following information a) number of female and males, the number that have
PhD's, the number that have practical non academic experience in
business.
The first semester this year has 6 modules; everyone who is teaching holds
a PhD with the exception of the academic delivering the Accounting and
Finance module, who is a qualified accountant with several decades of
industry experience. Every academic who is teaching has some industry
experience, whether that is in a career prior to academia or as a result
of consultancy work. There are 5 males and 1 female. Our second semester
has a total of 6 modules but 8 topics to choose from. We have not
finalised the teaching team thus not able to provide exact gender
breakdown, but based on last year it will be 4 male and 4 female, everyone
who teaches will have a PhD.
4. The size of the last two years MBA student body (number of students on
each course)
5. The number of different nationalities within the student body over the
last two years.
6. The female to male ratio for students in the last two years.
The information requested in questions 4-6 is published by the Higher
Education Statistics Agency: [1]https://www.hesa.ac.uk/ and is therefore
exempt from disclosure by the University under Sections 21 and 22 of the
Freedom of Information Act (information available via other means, and
information intended for future publication).
Further information about the MBA programme is available
here: [2]https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/management/s...
I am required under the Act to inform you that if you have cause for
genuine complaint regarding our reply to your request for information, you
should within 60 days of receiving this response, write to the University
FOI Unit, The University Secretary’s Office, Sheffield University, Western
Bank, Sheffield S10 2TN or email [3][University of Sheffield request email] explaining why you
are not satisfied with the result.

If you still remain unsatisfied with the University's decision, you will
be entitled to complain to the Information Commissioner, Wycliffe House,
Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire SK9 5AF.

Yours sincerely

Tom Carrington
