Maternity provision for fixed-term post-doctoral researchers

The request was successful.

Dear King’s College, Cambridge,

I am trying to find out more about maternity provision for post-doctoral researchers in Cambridge and Oxford, and hope you can answer the following questions for me:

1) Does your college employ Junior Research Fellows, or have an equivalent paid fixed-term post-doctoral research position?

2) If so, are such researchers eligible for maternity leave and pay? Please give details of any existing policy, and whether it has been applied in the last five years.

3) If maternity leave is taken by a JRF or post-doctoral researcher on a fixed-term contract, is the duration of the position extended by an amount of time equivalent to the time taken as leave, so that research time and funding is not lost as a result of taking leave? Please provide any details.

Thanks in advance for any information you can give me.

Yours faithfully,

J Iqbal

Dear J Iqbal,

This is in reply to your enquiry received by the College on 7 January and
made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA). I can confirm that
the College does hold some information related to your request. The
information as held by the College is:

1)            Does your college employ Junior Research Fellows, or have an
equivalent paid fixed-term post-doctoral research position?

Yes.

2) If so, are such researchers eligible for maternity leave and pay?
Please give details of any existing policy, and whether it has been
applied in the last five years.

Yes.  The policy follows the University with 6 months fully paid. It has
been applied in the past 5 years.

3) If maternity leave is taken by a JRF or post-doctoral researcher on a
fixed-term contract, is the duration of the position extended by an amount
of time equivalent to the time taken as leave, so that research time and
funding is not lost as a result of taking leave? Please provide any
details.

Research Fellowships are restricted to 4 years by Statute.  So, if a
Research Fellow takes maternity leave (or related family leave), the
Fellowship is suspended for the period of leave.  That means that during
the leave they are paid but are not Fellows.  All of the benefits of the
Fellowship, except membership of the Governing Body, are continued through
the leave.

If you have further questions please ask me in the first instance. I
attach a leaflet outlining the College's FOI Act policies and procedures.
If, after following those procedures you are still not satisfied with the
way in which your request has been dealt with you may apply directly to
the Information Commissioner for a decision. Generally, the Commissioner
will not entertain your complaint unless you have exhausted any relevant
internal review procedures.

Yours sincerely

Peter Jones
