Dear London Ambulance Service NHS Trust,

Under the Freedom of Information Act, I would like to request the following information on the number of staff impacted by long Covid under your trust.

How many staff members were recorded to have had long Covid while working for your trust at any time in the period between March 2020 - September 2021?.

What were the five longest periods in days that a member of staff took a leave of absence due to long Covid in the time period between March 2020 - September 2021?

Could you state all leave of absences taken where long Covid was cited as the cause between March 2020 and September 2021.

Does your trust offer any specialised support for staff members living with long Covid? If so could you please provide details of these services.

What plans, if any, are in place to improve the support available to staff members who are living with long Covid while working for your trust?

Yours faithfully,

Grace Pritchard

FOIADMIN (LONDON AMBULANCE SERVICE NHS TRUST),

Dear Grace Pritchard

Thank you for your Freedom of Information (FOI) request below.

In your request you have asked for:

1.     How many staff members were recorded to have had long Covid while
working for your trust at any time in the period between March 2020 -
September 2021?

Please note that the Trust does not hold information in the way that it is
requested. The London Ambulance Service NHS Trust does not have a tag on
its system systems to identify long covid cases.

However, by way of advice and assistance, please note that we have applied
the following criteria ‘Any employee who has had an episode of covid
sickness which has lasted for more than 12 or more continuous weeks (84
days)’ in order to be able to provide you with some data in response to
your questions.  Hope that you find this helpful.

We can confirm that during the period 1^st March 2020 to 30^th September
2021, there were a total of 50 staff who had an episode of Covid sickness
for 12 weeks or longer.

2.     What were the five longest periods in days that a member of staff
took a leave of absence due to long Covid in the time period between March
2020 - September 2021?

·       350 days

·       345 days

·       319 days

·       297 days

·       276 days

3.     Could you state all leave of absences taken where long Covid was
cited as the cause between March 2020 and September 2021.

Please see Q1.

4.     Does your trust offer any specialised support for staff members
living with long Covid? If so could you please provide details of these
services.

We can confirm that there is a support group within the Trust,
specifically for staff members who are living with post covid syndrome.
This support group runs every two weeks and gives staff the opportunity to
speak freely about any feelings, thoughts or emotions they are currently
having as well as speak about the worries they face in coming back to
work. During the time this group has been set up, we have invited speakers
from Human Resources and Occupational Health to come and speak to the
staff to try and alleviate worries they may have surrounding job security.
We have also managed to work alongside our payroll department to ensure
that staff who have been signed off specifically with post covid syndrome
are not penalised in a pay capacity so after their 6 months on full pay
will remain on full pay up until 12 months of being off sick where it will
then be reviewed. This has been actioned for those who have come forward
in this support group.

5.     What plans, if any, are in place to improve the support available
to staff members who are living with long Covid while working for your
trust?

One of the major things we found for staff who are suffering with post
covid syndrome is the length of time they are having to wait for referrals
to long covid clinics or respiratory clinics. We are working alongside The
Physio Network (TPN) to provide a desk clinic where staff will answer a
set of questions and then be provided with a personalised exercise
programme which they can complete at home. They will then also be invited
to attend a group physio session which is tailored specifically around
respiratory physio as well as other elements that staff may be struggling
with physically. We will also continue to support staff within the support
group as well as advertise the group to anyone else within the trust who
may be experiencing and struggling with the same thing.
