Dear Donna Muirhead,

Many thanks for your quick reply.

However most of the place names are in English; please resubmit with the Welsh place names, as asked.

Yours sincerely,

Llywelyn

Donna Muirhead, Countryside Council for Wales

Dear Llywelyn,

Under EIR 2004, CCW is obliged to provide you with official recorded information that we hold at the time of the request which we have done so as part of your request.

However you are requesting that we provide you with the same excel sheet with all the SSSI names in Welsh.

Under 12(4)(a) of the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 CCW has to refuse part of this request as we do not hold this information. However as you will see on the excel sheet most of the names are in Welsh already.

CCW can only supply the excel sheet with the legally notified sites names.

Regards
Donna

Dear Donna Muirhead,

I disagree. You are obliged by law to translate: please contact Bwrdd yr Iaith (The Welsh Language Board).

Diolch yn fawr.

Yours sincerely,

Llywelyn

Dear Donna,

I'm still waiting for a reply, Donna; did you check it out with Bwrdd yr Iaith (the Welsh Language Board)?

If I don't hear from you in 7 days I'll take it that you are refusing to send me the place names in Welsh. Yes come of them have, 70% are monolingual -English only. I will then have to contact Bwrdd yr Iaith myself.

Yours sincerely,

Llywelyn

Donna Muirhead, Countryside Council for Wales

Dear Sir,

As Mentioned in my previous e-mail, CCW can only provide you with the legal names of the SSSI's as notified by law.

Most of the SSSI were legally notified during the time when the Nature Conservancy Council (NCC) was in power. The NCC was and English body and therefore most of the sites were legally notified with English names.

When CCW came into force it was a Welsh organisation with a bilingual policy, which meant that sites would be legally notified bilingually or with the Welsh name. CCW continue to notify SSSI's with Welsh/bilingual names and also when re-notifying.

I hope this provides you with the reason as to why the SSSI have English names and that we can only provide you with the legally notified names.
If you are still unsatisfied with my response please feel free to take your complaint the Bwrdd y Iaith or by using our complaints procedure set out below.

Regards
Donna Muirhead
