Freedom of Information
23 July 2021
Dear Jonathan Bull
Reference number: FOI2021/00971
Thank you for your email of 24 June 2021 in which you requested the following
1. I would like a full list of all rail tracks in the UK.
2. I would like the data in longitude and latitude and the data should include the
location of all rail track in the UK.
I have processed your request under the Environmental Information Regulations
2004 (EIR). The EIR, like the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA), allows people to
access information held by public authorities, like Network Rail. When people ask for
environmental information, we need to consider the request under the EIR rather than the
FOIA.1 In this case, I am of the view that the information in question meets the definition
of environmental information at Reg.2(1)(a) of the EIR2 because it is information on
“…an area of land whose character and appearance has resulted from the interaction of
natural or human factors, or both.”3
Please find attached a spreadsheet labelled Network Links Railtrack that contains the
information you have requested.
1 Section 39 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) exempts environmental information from the
FOIA and requires us to consider it under the EIR.

When reviewing the data please bear in mind the attached our caveat regarding the
process and use of this data.
I hope this is helpful. If you have any enquiries about this response, please contact me in
the first instance at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Details of your appeal rights are below.
Please remember to quote the reference number at the top of this letter in all future
