Landfill Tax. Recycle income
Dear Scottish Borders Council,
How much was paid in landfill tax over the last three years?
How much is spent diverting waste that would have been landing as landfill waste over three years?
How much was generated by paper/cardboard and plastic waste collected over three years?
Yours faithfully,
John Brown

How are you playing [7]#yourpart to help us keep the Borders thriving?
Dear John Brown
The above request is exempt under S39(2) Environmental Information of
FOISA therefore we respond under the Environmental Information (Scotland)
Regulations 2004.
The following response was prepared and provided on behalf of Assets &
Infrastructure:
1. Total £7,800,135
2017/18 £3,381,574
2018/19 £3,480,484
2019/20 £938,775 April to June only as we closed our landfill site
at the end of June and all waste is now sent to a material recycling
facility instead of landfill.
2. Recylate is collected separately at the kerbside and also kept
separate at our Community Recycling Centres (CRC) and sent off for
appropriate treatment / recycling. General waste was sent straight to
landfill up to end June 2019 and now is sent to a material recycling
facility for sorting and treatment as appropriate. Waste/recyclate is not
“diverted” as such but kept separate at point of collection or disposal at
CRC site.
3. No income was generated by paper/cardboard and plastic waste collected
over three years. There is a cost to Scottish Borders Council for the
treatment of these waste types although it is less than the cost of
landfill.
I should advise that you have a right to request a review within 40
