Freedom of Information requests, University of Huddersfield

Good Afternoon,

Our response to your request for information dated 27 January 2021 is
provided below.

 1. What is the expenditure on Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF) Staff
salaries?
 2. How many staff members' role is directly linked to KEF? Has this
number been increasing/decreasing?

Knowledge Exchange (KE) is a core part of the University’s activity and
all our academic staff have an element of KE related activity as part of
their job role ranging from student enterprise to spinouts. All academic
staff contribute towards the KE activity in some way through teaching or
research activities for undergraduate, postgraduate or research students.
There are business development and public engagement activities, including
tracking and reporting on various KEF activities are carried out by the
Support staff as part of their main job role. The University does not hold
the exact percentage of their role, or the FTE that is dedicated to KEF
activities. However, please note that the Higher Education Innovation Fund
(HEIF) allocated to the University is [1]publicly available.
Approximately, 50% of the funding allocation is expended on KE staff
salaries.

 3. What type of activities do you report to KEF?

The KEF metrics and the activities are reported through the HE-BCI return
to [2]HESA. As the information you seek is accessible in this way, this
email constitutes a refusal notice for this element of your request under
Section 17(4) of the Freedom of Information Act and an exemption under
Section 21(1) of the Act is being applied.

 4. What is the 'impact' of KEF activities? How do you quantify their
'impact'?

At present, the University is unable quantify the impact of KEF activities
as a whole. However please note that the University is in the process of
developing a Knowledge Exchange Strategy in response to the KE Concordat
introduced by the UKRI. This will provide the framework for monitoring and
demonstrating the impact of key KEF activities.

5.   What is the annual expenditure on tracking/reporting Knowledge
Exchange activities?

The University does not specifically monitor the annual expenditure on
tracking / reporting Knowledge Exchange activities; such activities are
undertaken by support and administration staff both centrally and within
individual Schools alongside other activities. We are therefore unable to
quantify how much time staff dedicate to KE specific activity and are
consequently unable determine the annual expenditure.

      6.   What is the annual expenditure on IT software relating to REF,
TEF and KEF?

Please note that REF, TEF and KEF are three core elements of the
University’s activities and most of the IT software is used for these
activities alongside other primary purposes. The University is unable to
quantify the exact percentage of usage of the software specifically for
REF, TEF and KEF related activities and therefore determine the
expenditure, as requested.

I hope this satisfies your request. However, if you are dissatisfied with
the handling of your request, you have the right to ask for an internal
review. Internal review requests should be submitted within 40 working
days from the date of our response to your original request and should be
addressed to the University Secretary, University of Huddersfield,
Queensgate, Huddersfield HD1 3DH or by email to [3][University of Huddersfield request email].
