KEF data

We're waiting for Emily Devonald to read recent responses and update the status.

Dear University of Essex,

I am writing to you under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 to request the following information from the University regarding Knowledge Exchange activities:

1. What is the expenditure on KEF Staff salaries?

2. How many staff members' role is directly linked to KEF? Has this number been increasing/decreasing?

3. What type of activities do you report to KEF?

4. What is the 'impact' of KEF activities? How do you quantify their 'impact'?

5. What is the annual expenditure on tracking/reporting Knowledge Exchange activities?

6. What is the annual expenditure on IT software relating to REF, TEF and KEF?

I look forward to your response within 20 working days, as stipulated by the Act.

If you have any further queries please don’t hesitate to contact me, and I will be happy to clarify what I am asking for.

Yours faithfully,

Miss Devonald

Freedom Of Information Requests, University of Essex

Dear Emily

Thank you for your enquiry dated 26^th January, received by us on the same
date concerning KEF data.  Your request is being handled under the Freedom
of Information Act 2000.  Please accept our apologies for the slight delay
in sending our response to you.  Please see our response below.

Please note that the University of Essex does not have any roles dedicated
to KEF. The work of developing content and coordination of the KEF
submission is spread across a number roles at the university. Time spent
on this activity is not accurately measured and therefore the figures that
we provide below are estimates.

1.     What is the expenditure on KEF Staff salaries?

Estimated cost of £22k in staff time across a number of staff roles.

2.     How many staff members' role is directly linked to KEF? Has this
number been increasing/decreasing?

4 members of staff have a responsibility for KEF as a component of their
roles. There are no planned changes as to how future KEF submissions are
resourced.

3.     What type of activities do you report to KEF?

KEF will be based on data submitted for the Higher Education Business &
Community Interaction (HEBCI) submission that covers a range of Knowledge
Exchange activities (including CPD, contract research, commercialisation
of intellectual property, etc.) to demonstrate the impact of research
activities on society and the economy. We include all relevant elements of
our Knowledge Exchange activity in the HEBCI submission. The narrative
statements that we provide give context about the nature of this
collaborative work, significant achievements and key partnerships.

4.     What is the 'impact' of KEF activities? How do you quantify their
'impact'?

KEF is a national reporting framework run by Research England that
evaluated the effectiveness of knowledge exchange activities. There are
standard inputs set by Research England that participating universities
must adhere to. When KEF is published it will be publically available, so
will impact public perception of the university and, in the future,
performance in KEF may influence funding. We plan to monitor how the
output of KEF is used once published.

5.     What is the annual expenditure on tracking/reporting Knowledge
Exchange activities?

No staff roles are dedicated to reporting or monitoring of KE as these
activities are a component of roles of a number of members of staff.
Across the organisation, we estimate a staff time cost of £60k/pa for
statutory returns for knowledge exchange and internal management
information relating to knowledge exchange.

            6.  What is the annual expenditure on IT software relating to
REF, TEF and KEF?

As the University does not have IT software that is solely used for the
REF, TEF and KEF we do not hold this information.   Our systems are used
for all sorts of activities and it would therefore be impossible to
identify what proportion of use could be designated just for REF, TEF and
KEF.

I hope you find this information useful but if you have any questions
about the data, please let me know.

Best wishes
