Journalism Department Students and Staff

The request was successful.

Nicole Garcia Merida

Dear Newcastle University,

Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 I seek the following information about all journalism students:

1. The number of female students, broken down per course.
2. The number of male students, broken down per course.
3. The number of non EU international students, broken down per course.
4. The number of EU students, broken down per course.

I would like this information for the five most recent academic years.

Additionally, I also seek the following regarding journalism faculty:

1. The number of members of faculty (professors) that have resigned, broken down into UK, EU, and International categories. I.e: 4 UK members of staff, 2 EU members of staff, 7 international members of staff.

I would like this information for the five most recent academic years.

I would prefer to receive this information electronically, preferably as a data set, eg. in Excel, NOT as a PDF.

If the decision is made to withhold some of this data using exemptions in the Data Protection Act, please inform me of that fact and cite the exemptions used.

If some parts of this request are easier to answer than others, I would ask that you release the available data as soon as possible.

If you need any clarification then please do not hesitate to contact me. Under Section 16 it is your duty to provide advice and assistance and so I would expect you to contact me if you find this request unmanageable in any way.

I would be grateful if you could confirm in writing that you have received this request, and I look forward to hearing from you within the 20-working day statutory time period.

Regards,

Nicole Garcia Merida

Dear nrecman,

Thank you for your prompt response. I realise that "journalism students" and "journalism department" might not encompass all courses relevant to the information I require. I would like information regarding staff and students for the following courses:

- Journalism Media and Culture BA
- Media, Communication and Cultural Studies BA
- International Multimedia Journalism MA
- Media and Journalism MA
- Journalism and Public Relations MA

If some parts of this request are easier to answer than others, I would ask that you release the available data as soon as possible.

Dear Nicole,

Thank you for your request for information, which we have handled under
the Freedom of Information Act (2000). You requested the following:

1. The number of female students, broken down per course.
2. The number of male students, broken down per course.
3. The number of non EU international students, broken down per course.
4. The number of EU students, broken down per course.

I would like this information for the five most recent academic years.

Additionally, I also seek the following regarding journalism faculty:

1. The number of members of faculty (professors) that have resigned,
broken down into UK, EU, and International categories. I.e: 4 UK members
of staff, 2 EU members of staff, 7 international members of staff.

I would like this information for the five most recent academic years.

Please see the attached spreadsheet for our response to Questions 1-4.
Please note that responding in full to your request would result in
reporting small numbers (fewer than 5) in some categories. Reporting this
information would create a risk of some individuals being identifiable.
This information is therefore exempt from disclosure under section
40(2)/40(3)(a)(i) of the Freedom of Information Act (2000), as it is
personal data relating to those individuals. Where this exemption has been
applied, we have entered ‘<5’ for the categories affected and have not
reported the precise numbers in other categories that would permit the
withheld responses to be inferred.

Regarding your additional question: Newcastle University does not have a
Faculty of Journalism, nor has it in the last five academic years. There
have not been any members of staff connected to journalism at professorial
level employed during that time.

I hope that this is of use. If you are unhappy with the way we have
handled your request you can ask for an internal review. Details of how to
do this can be found at: [1]http://www.ncl.ac.uk/foi/access/complain...

If you are not happy with the outcome of the internal review, you then
have the right to apply directly to the Information Commissioner's Office
for a decision. Details of how to do this can be found at:
