Roedd y cais yn llwyddiannus.

Geoffrey M Woodhouse

Dear Department for Education,
Please send me the census data for each primary and each secondary school in the London Borough of Richmond for January 2020 and, if available, May 2020.

I need these data at the level of National Curriculum Year-group within school. I shall be happy to receive them in the form of an Excel spreadsheet.

Many thanks.

Yours faithfully,

Geoffrey M Woodhouse

GIBSON, Sean, Department for Education

Dear Geoffrey,

The freedom of information request, FOI2020-0029677, has been withdrawn as
this was covered in the response to FOI2020-0029676.

For reference the response was –

Figures for January 2020 are available at school level in the file ‘School
level underlying data’, under the ‘Download associated files’ on the
schools, pupils and their characteristics publication available at:

[1]https://explore-education-statistics.ser...

Due to the impact of coronavirus (COVID-19), the summer census did not
take place and therefore data will not be available for May 2020.

Kind regards

Sean

Dear GIBSON, Sean,
I wrote yesterday in response to Ms Natalie Wood to explain my problem. This is what I wrote
-----------------------------------
Thank you for your clear reply to my questions about Scorecards and SCAP actuals. Thank you also for sending updated School Census data.

I also asked for census data at NC Year level within school for January 2020. You have sent me a link ,
https://explore-education-statistics.ser... ,
through which I have downloaded all the worksheets available.

Unfortunately, I cannot find the data that I need, which are NC Year-group numbers within school. I find that either the schools are anonymised or the data for the schools are in terms of age and gender and not NC Year-group.

Please will you send me the January 2020 School Census data for Richmond in the form in which all the other census data have been sent to me?

---------------------------------------

As you see, I have already looked through all the files I could find through the link I was sent, and which you have again sent me.

As far as I can see, they do not contain data at NC Year level within named school in Richmond. These school census data, for January 2020 in Richmond, are what I asked for 19 working days ago. You have previously sent me such data for other school censuses in an easily manageable form.

Have I missed something? If so, can you kindly tell me how I can find these specific data following the link you have sent me?

If not, please send me the school census data I have specified without further delay.

Many thanks.

Yours sincerely,

Geoffrey M Woodhouse

Dear Geoffrey,

Within the 'School level underlying data' file, available at: https://explore-education-statistics.ser...

Column H can be filtered for local authority, then column N can be filtered for state-funded primary and secondary.

Columns DW to GX contain the number of pupils in each year group. This is broken down by gender and part time/full-time status so will require some aggregation.

For ease, I have added these aggregations in the attached file, see columns JR to KK.

I will add totals by national curriculum year (and not just by gender and part time/full time split) to our list of improvements for this data in future.

I hope this is useful

Dear GIBSON, Sean,
Thank you for your speedy reply.
I realise you are trying to help, but I've already done what you have suggested, and I still can't get the breakdown of information that I need.
As you probably know, Richmond has two planning areas for secondary schools and ten for primary schools. I need to be able to aggregate data on each NC Year group to the level of secondary planning area.
I cannot do this without knowing the location of each school.
This information is easily available to me from the standard school census worksheet that you have previously sent me for many other school censuses, most recently the corrected school censuses for May (all years), for October 2017 and for January 2018.
What is the difficulty about sending me data in the same form for January 2020?
Please explain and, preferably, send me the data in a form that I can use.
Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Geoffrey M Woodhouse

GIBSON, Sean, Department for Education

Dear Geoffrey,

I have rearranged the file further. I have included only primary and secondary schools in Richmond local authority and have removed any superfluous columns to provide the data in the same format as previous requests, to leave only school name, the LAestab number, phase and the totals by year group. If there is anything further to this required, then please let me know.

We publish the school level dataset with numerous different breakdowns in order to allow as many users as possible to be able to produce their own bespoke statistics, for example being able to sum over year group, or just by gender or part time/full time or combinations of these things. There are certainly limitations in how much we can provide, but in general this enables us to signpost users to the published data more regularly, and reduces the number of queries, including FOI's, that require ourselves to produce further breakdowns.

I hope this helps. I will aim to respond as soon as reasonably possible to further correspondence however I am likely to be unavailable this afternoon.

Kind regards
Sean

Dear Sean,
Thank you very much!
I don't know how you managed to get the school names and establishment numbers linked with the NC Year-group data - perhaps, when you have time, you could tell me, but that's not necessary. For now, I have everything I need.
I quite understand that you do not wish to be receiving constant FoI requests for census data.
As regards the data published through the link you offered, I cannot see why the schools are anonymised on the sheets that supply Year group data. Or so it seemed to me - perhaps I'm wrong, but I did spend some time over it.
Thank you again.
Best wishes
Geoff
