Open Rights Group

Dear Central School of Speech and Drama,

I am writing as a research volunteer at the Open Rights Group. We are conducting a study to better understand filtering and blocking of websites on the public estate, to understand what content and sites are inaccessible and why.

We would like to know, in relation to your publicly accessible Internet networks, or Internet networks for your clients:

1. The categories of content blocked or filtered, eg:
a) Security or Malware
b) Content types, eg adult, alcohol etc
c) Statistics relating to the requests blocked or filtered, eg how many site requests are filtered or blocked per category

2. Monitoring requirements you have for users, eg if you record or may record their Internet usage

3. The supplier of your blocking or filtering software
a) Eg, Sophos, Forcepoint, Palo Alto etc.

4. If you filter, is the policy any different on student residences
a) Do you supply Internet to any private student accommodation that you have a contractual relationship with

Sincerely,

Charlie Parker

FOI, Royal Central School of Speech and Drama

Dear Charlie Parker,

Please find below the School's FOI response:

1. The categories of content blocked or filtered, eg:
a) Security or Malware - Content marked by our firewall as malicious is being blocked automatically. The firewall receives automatic updates from the manufacturer
b) Content types, eg adult, alcohol etc - No filtering
c) Statistics relating to the requests blocked or filtered, eg how many site requests are filtered or blocked per category - We do not actively keep such records

2. Monitoring requirements you have for users, eg if you record or may record their Internet usage - The IT department monitors traffic throughout the School network. The system will allow to do forensic reverse engineering (manual steps required) to identify the origin points of abnormal events.

3. The supplier of your blocking or filtering software
a) Eg, Sophos, Forcepoint, Palo Alto etc. - We use Palo Alto hardware

4. If you filter, is the policy any different on student residences - We do not filter
a) Do you supply Internet to any private student accommodation that you have a contractual relationship with - No, but our students do have access to the internet when they stay at the University of London Halls of residence. While they are using the internet there, they are operating under their rules and regulations regarding internet access

Yours Sincerely,

Abigail Fitch-Hickson
