Information request regarding PIRC and Police Scotland.
Dear Police Scotland, I am writing to you to ask if you can confirm, that matters deemed of a 'non-serious' nature in complaints to the Police, would NOT be sent to PIRC, which can only deal with serious complaints to the Chief Constable and in certain select conditions. Therefore, all complaints deemed to be NON-serious, would in actuality, be decided by Police Scotland, themselves. Which I feel is not an adequate state of affairs. This if true, amounts to Police Scotland being completely responsible for ALL non-serious complaints. Which in my opinion, is not adequate provision for complaints against officers. If true, this then would surely amount to the police being the sole judge and jury for all complaints of a non-serious nature. I do not believe this is acceptable as a "high quality service" to the people of Scotland, which falls short of what I believe is a fair and impartial police complaints system.
Yours faithfully,
Joseph Chalmers
NOT PROTECTIVELY MARKED
Good afternoon Mr Chalmers
Thank you for your recent FOI request.
I have contacted our Professional Standards Department, who have confirmed that we do not have a category on our complaints recording system for "non serious" complaints. Would it be possible to clarify which specific type of police complaints you are interested in and I can revert back to PSD for the information you require?
Kind regards
Louise
