Request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000

Dear Stewart Gibb

Thank you for your email of 4 February requesting information regarding
NS&I’s dealings with Stonewall.

Your Request

1. Any application you made in 2019 or 2020 to be a “Stonewall Diversity
Champion” or to be included on Stonewall’s “Workplace Equality Index,”
including any attachments or appendices to those applications. Please
redact personal details if necessary.

2. Any feedback you received in 2019 or 2020 from Stonewall in relation to
either application or programme.

3. Any other communication you have received from Stonewall in 2019 or
2020 unless privileged or otherwise exempt from disclosure (but if you
claim privilege or exemption in relation to any material, please say in
broad terms what the material is and the basis on which you claim to be
entitled to withhold it).

4. Full details of any equality impact assessment you carried out
connected with any of these applications (including any equality impact
assessment carried out prior to an earlier application of the same kind,
if no further assessment was done).

5. Details of the total amount of money you paid to Stonewall (i) in 2019;
(ii) in 2020, whether or not as payment for goods or services.

6. Whether you intend to continue your membership of any Stonewall scheme
in the future, and if so which.

Our Response

1. NS&I was a Stonewall Diversity Champion for one year in 2019-20. We
completed a purchase order to Stonewall in order to become a Diversity
Champion. NS&I did not apply to be included on the Stonewall Equality
Index.

2. No feedback was received.

3. I have attached copies of all communications NS&I received from
Stonewall in 2019 and 2020. Any information redacted from the emails has
been done so as it contains personal information and is exempt under
Section 40(2) of the Freedom of Information Act as we are not obliged to
provide information that is the personal information of another person if
releasing it would contravene any of the provisions in the Data Protection
Act 2018.

NS&I’s Stonewall Diversity Champion membership  gave us access to various
online resources, subsidised places at a conference, and a service liaison
manager with whom we had at least one face-to-face meeting where they took
us through the criteria for the Workplace Equality Index.

Diversity Champion membership also gave NS&I the option of placing five
job vacancy advertisements on Stonewall’s website. We placed four ads
there during 2019-2020.

4. NS&I used the Workplace Equality Index criteria to look more broadly
across all the equality characteristics to see if we were falling short on
any (while recognising each specific characteristic might have certain
different needs too). Based on this review we updated several of our HR
policies.

5. We made one payment to Stonewall in April 2019 of £2500 + VAT (£500)
for our Diversity Championship membership. This membership lapsed in April
2020.

6. At this point we have no immediate plans to re-instate our membership
but we keep all such plans under review.
