Hearing protection

The request was refused by Ministry of Defence.

Robert Campbell

Dear Ministry of Defence,

I would like to know the following:

1. What hearing protection for both operations and training has been issued to service personnel since 1990, by make and model?

2. What dates did each model enter service and what date were they discontinued?

3. What selection process was observed when deciding on a make and model of hearing protection devices?

4. What independent testing did the MOD do or direct prior to each device being accepted into service?

Yours faithfully,

Robert Campbell

Dear Mr Campbell,

Your request has been logged under our reference FOI2020/007870.  The

achieve this, due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic and the effect on
resources and necessary changes to ways of working, we should advise that
it may take longer to provide a substantive response to some requests.

Dear DES SEC-PolSec LE-JSC-WPNS (MULTIUSER),

Thank you for your prompt response.

Could I please add an additional question to the original request:

How many of the following specific model of earplugs were issued to UK personnel:

NSN: 6515-01-466-2710 – Combat Arms Earplug, Dual Ended, Universal Size.

And what dates were they issued to and from, and what was the specified purpose of this equipment?

Yours sincerely,

Robert Campbell

Dear DES SEC-PolSec LE-JSC-WPNS (MULTIUSER),

Thank you for your swift response.

Could I please clarify my question which would make it easier to answer:

1. What hearing protection, in terms of ear defenders or ear plugs for both operations and training, for ground combat only, has been issued to service personnel since 1990, by make and model?

2. How many of the following specific model of earplugs were issued to UK personnel:
NSN: 6515-01-466-2710 – Combat Arms Earplug, Dual Ended, Universal Size.
What dates were they issued to and from, and what was the specified purpose of this equipment?

To be clear, I am uninterested in ear defence for industrial type protection, aircraft noise, or integrated communications systems. I trust these two questions would not onerous to discover and without excessive cost involved.

Yours sincerely,

Robert Campbell

Dear DES SEC-PolSec LE-JSC-WPNS (MULTIUSER),

Im finding your response to be rather improbable, that DE&S do not hold easily retrieved records of PPE.

It is not necessary for you to contact every unit to fulfil my request. Simply state how many units of each type of PPE were purchased and how many were issued to personnel.

It is implausible to me that this would take 3.5 days.

Yours sincerely,

Robert Campbell
