H301/H401 Statistics for International Students

The request was successful.

Dear Imperial College London,

I am writing to request information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. Please could you provide information on the following questions for H301 and H401 (mechanical and aeronautical engineering) entry:

In my request, "international applicants" can be taken as overseas fee paying applicants.

1. How many International applications were received for 2019 entry, 2018 entry, and 2017 entry, for each course?
2. How many International applicants received an offer for 2019 entry, 2018 entry, and 2017 entry, for each course?
3. How many applications from North American students were received, and how many offers were made, for 2019 entry, 2018 entry, and 2017 entry, for each course?

Thank you, and all the best,

Nicholas Wilger

IMPFOI, Imperial College London

Dear Nicholas,

Thank you for your Freedom of Information Act request relating to
admissions and entry requirements. Imperial College receives a number of
requests for this type of information and has therefore decided to publish
full details of applicant admission information for each Faculty,
Department and Programme (course) to include: number of applicants, number
of offers made, places confirmed, A Level/IB/IMAT grades/scores achieved,
how many applicants from the UK, EU or otherwise from overseas and which
countries non-UK/EU applicants came from. Please note that we do not hold
information on whether students were “north American”, we hold information
on which country they come from, e.g. USA, Canada etc.

As this information will be published shortly, it is exempt from the
Freedom of Information Act by virtue of Section 22 of the Act which states
that information is exempt if “the information is held by the public
authority with a view to its publication”. The S.22 exemption is a
qualified exemption that requires the College to weigh the public interest
in disclosing the information requested in advance of the planned
publication date against the public interest in maintaining the exemption.
While there is some interest from a section of the public (potential
applicants to the College) in accessing detailed information about our
applications, offers made and places confirmed, we are not aware of any
public interest arguments that would require the College to make this
information available in advance of our planned publication date. There is
sufficient information already in the public domain to assist potential
applicants with the decision whether to apply to Imperial College.

If you have made this request because you are thinking of applying to
study at Imperial College, please refer to the information on our website
about the courses available. The entry requirements for each course are
published. Each department has an admissions tutor whose contact details
are listed on the department’s web pages. General enquiries can be
addressed to [1][email address]. You should also consider
attending one of our [2]open days.

If you are unhappy with the way that we have handled your request, you can
ask us to conduct a review. Please make your representation in writing
within 40 days of the date you received this response. If you remain
dissatisfied with how Imperial College has handled your request, you may
then approach the [3]Information Commissioner’s Office.

Yours,

Freedom of Information Team
