GP Induction and Refresher scheme

The request was successful.

Dear Health Education England,

You have previously answered a FOI on the GP Induction and Refresher information in 2014 and 2017 with regards to the numbers of doctors joining the scheme from UK, EU and beyond.

In 2017 your answers were as follows.
A) 262 doctors have applied from the UK B) 160 doctors have applied from Europe C) In November 2016, 36 doctors from the UK and 4 doctors from Europe have completed the scheme. There are 169 doctors from the UK and 114 doctors from Europe still on the scheme.

There were at least 400 doctors who have applied and at least 300 doctors who have sat the examinations associated with this scheme.

My FOI request refers to the performance of these (and any further doctors) in the clinical skills test and the knowledge test that these doctors sit at the beginning and the end of the I and R scheme.

Ideally I would like a break down of marks for each doctor but recognise that this is unlikely to be acceptable on the grounds that individuals may be identified although given the large numbers you may consider this not to be a problem.

I therefore request that you provide at a minimum the percentage of the I&R doctors that passed each of the examinations broken down by first, second or more sittings and by UK/EU origin.

Could you please also confirm whether the knowledge examination marks are broken down by clinical module (for example - respiratory, CVS, GIT, etc.?)

Yours faithfully,

Dr Mark Burgin

Dear FOIA,

You have previously replied to a FOI request.

This data comprised about 400 doctors.

I wish you to provide data on these doctors.

The FOI request was up to 2017.

I wish to provide data until now.

In summary the previous data plus updated data.

This will be greater than the 400 doctors mentioned in the original FOI as it will include those who have entered the scheme and sat the examinations since the original FOI but would not include those who have entered the I and R scheme and not sat the examinations.

It is the examination results that I am looking for.

Yours sincerely,

Mark Burgin

Dear FOIA,

Could you please double check your figures for the EU.

97 EU doctors sat and 66% passed.

Then comes the odd figure 73 passed first time 20 passed second time and 4 passed third time making a total of 97 who passed.

EU 97 31 31.96% 66 68.04% 73 75.26% 20 20.62% 4 4.12% 0 0.00%

Same problem with the IMGs - am I right in thinking that EU and IMG have to sit the examination more than once even if they have passed?

Yours sincerely,

Mark Burgin

Dear Mark,

Thank you for your email.

We have checked the data that we supplied in our response to you of 1 August 2018 and can confirm that it is correct.

To clarify, using the MCQ assessment as an example, this was taken by 97 EU doctors. 66 of those sittings resulted in a pass, 31 resulted in a fail.

The data on the right of the table shows that, of those 97, 73 attempted the test once, 20 attempted it twice, and 4 attempted it three times.

In response to your question about whether EU and IMG doctors have to sit the examination more than once even if they have passed, the answer is no. However, even if doctors do pass, they can choose to take the test again in order to try to improve their scores.

Further information about the recruitment and assessment process, which I hope will be useful to you, can be found on the following website:
