Dear Wan Ufa Nur Zuhra

Thank you for your enquiry. Before I go ahead and request the information, so that we can ensure that we provide you with the correct data, please could you just clarify your questions for me, as follows:

- For question 1, are you looking for ALL offences across the University or are you interested in just academic offences?
- For question 2, are you looking for the number of academic offences that involved students submitting work that was written by someone else?
- For question 3, are you asking if the cases mentioned in question 2 were detected by our plagiarism software?
- For question 4, are you asking how many of the cases mentioned in question 2 were instances of staff writing work for students?

If you could come back to me to clarify the above, I would be grateful. Please note that the 20 working days allowed by the Act for our response won't start counting down until I receive clarification from you.

Best wishes

Dear Wan Ufa Nur Zuhra

Following your recent enquiry regarding plagiarism and ghostwriting here
at the University of Essex, please find our response below (our
clarifications are in brackets in italics):

1. Please inform me of the number of disciplinary actions taken against
students resulting in a fine and/or expulsion in the last five academic
years, the reasons for such action being taken, and the results of any
appeal (we clarified with you that you are interested in academic offences
only) The following are the figures for the number of academic offences
where students have been expelled/withdrawn as a result of academic
offences:

2012-13 – 7

2013-14 – 0

2014-15 – 1

2015-16 – 1

2016-17 – 0 so far but we are only partway through the academic year

Unfortunately, due to the way our records are kept we are unable to
provide you with the reasons for such action being taken and the results
of any appeal.  However, we can confirm that any appeal would have been
rejected if the student was withdrawn.  Please find attached a document
which gives guidelines for imposing fixed penalties which you may find
useful.

2. In those academic years (2013 to 2017), How many of those are the case
where a ghostwriter involve? (for ex: assignment or dissertation were
written by somebody else) (we clarified with you that you are looking for
the number of academic offences that involved a student submitting work
that was written by someone else) Unfortunately we do not record this
information so this is information not held by us.

3. How to find out that ghostwriter involvement since many ghostwriter
organisations offer the plagiarism checking? (we clarified with you that
you are interested in how each instance was detected) Unfortunately we do
not record this information so this is information not held by us.

4. Is there any case where your staff involved in that unfair practice,
being a ghostwriter for the student? Please give the details about those
cases. (we clarified with you that you are interested in how many cases
mentioned in question 2 involved a piece of work being submitted that had
been written by a staff member for a student to hand in) Unfortunately we
don’t record this information so this is information not held by us.

I hope you find this information useful but if you have any queries about
the data, please do let me know.

Best wishes
