Our Ref. FOI1490

Dear Wan Ulfa Nur Zuhra,

Further to your request for information, the University's response is
below:

1. Please inform me of the number of disciplinary actions taken against
students resulting in a fine and/or expulsion in the last five academic
years, the reasons for such action being taken, and the results of any
appeal.

Cases considered by the University Disciplinary Officer are as follows:

Fines: zero.

Expulsions:

2018: 1, harassment

2017: 1, violence/aggression, 1 possession (weapons/drugs)

2016: 1, IT/social media (termination of studies, not an expulsion)

2. In those academic years (2013 to 2017), How many of those are the case
where a ghostwriter involve? (for ex: assignment or dissertation were
written by somebody else)

Of the cases mentioned in Q1 above, none involved ghostwriters.

3. How to find out that ghostwriter involvement since many ghostwriter
organisations offer the plagiarism checking?

Our principal route would be to identify a substantial change in quality,
by comparison with existing work.

Examples would include a clear coursework/exam differential, and
exceptional use of language in a second language speaker.

There have been times when fellow students have reported potential
ghostwriter involvement.

We would seek to intervene by interview, and potentially viva.

4. Is there any case where your staff involved in that unfair practice,
being a ghostwriter for the student?

The University is not aware of any cases where staff have acted as a
ghostwriter for a student.

Please note that the University has a formal complaints procedure. If you
are unhappy with the service you have received in relation to your request
and wish to make a complaint or request a review of our decision you
should write to the University’s Planning & Governance Office in the first
instance ([1][Bangor University request email]) explaining the grounds for your
complaint. In line with guidance from the Information Commissioner’s
Office, an appeal request must be submitted within two months of the
University’s final response to this Freedom of Information Act request.

Kind regards,

Compliance Team
