Gender Recognition Certificates issued by courts

The request was partially successful.

Dear Ministry of Justice,

Please can you provide a breakdown of:

1) How many full Gender Recognition Certificates (GRC) have been issued since 2004 by the courts in England and Wales in accordance with section 5(1) or 5A(1) of the Gender Recognition Act 2004 (GRA)? If possible please break this down by year.

2) How many applications under section 6(1) of the GRA have been made to the courts in England and Wales since 2004? Of these how may resulted in a reissued GRC, and how many were declined? If possible please break down into applications by the Secretary of State and applications by the person holding the GRC. If possible please break this down by year.

If answering both questions would be above the cost limit for an FOI request please prioritise question 1.

Yours faithfully,

Jessica Key

Dear [email address],

In your answer to my FOI request you directed me to the tables at https://www.gov.uk/government/publicatio...

In the excel document table 1 states that 157 interim GRCs were issued between Q1 2005/2006 and Q3 2013/2014. However table 5 states that 171 interim GRCs were issued in the same time period.

Please could you clarify which figure is correct and if necessary provide an updated spreadsheet.

Yours sincerely,

Jessica Key

Dear Ms Key,

Your query has been passed on to me as I am responsible for publishing the quarterly Gender Recognition Certificate Statistics.

The number of interim GRCs issued between Q1 2005/2006 and Q3 2013/2014 is 171. I've attached a copy of Table 1 with relevant figures highlighted in blue, to clarify how this figure is calculated.

I hope this helps.

Kind regards,

Caroline
