Gender balance on public boards in Scotland

Roedd y cais yn llwyddiannus.

Dear National Library of Scotland,

This is a Freedom of Information Request.

In November 2015 The First Minister made a commitment to work towards gender balance on all public boards in Scotland.

Please could you supply me with the following information?

1. At November 12 2015, how many men and and how many women were on the board of your organisation?
2. At November 12 2015, was the Chairperson (or person with an equivalent role) a man or a woman?
3. How many men and how many women are now on the board of your organisation?
4. Is the current Chairperson (or person with an equivalent role) a man or a woman?
5. Does the board have a formal strategy or policy commitment to achieving gender balance? If so please supply a copy of the document where the policy is laid out. Please also confirm the date that this policy was adopted.
6. What is the current median FTE pay for men and women in the organisation?

Please do not send the requested information in pdf format files. I would prefer to receive the requested information by email in a machine readable format such as MS Excel.

I look forward to hearing from you in due course.

Yours faithfully,

Ally Tibbitt

Dear National Library of Scotland,

Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews.

I am writing to request an internal review of National Library of Scotland's handling of my FOI request 'Gender balance on public boards in Scotland'.

I fear I may not have been clear about the information I was looking for with regard to median pay in my original request.

I am looking for separate current median pay information for the NLS broken down by gender, rather than an aggregate figure for both male and female employees. To be clear:

- What is the current median pay of women employees at NLS?
- What is the current median pay of male employees at NLS?

I look forward to hearing from you in due course, and apologies for any lack of clarity in my original request.

Yours faithfully,

Ally Tibbitt

Dear Ally Tibbitt,

Our reference: FOI 2017-2018 4002Review

Thank you for your request under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act
2002 (FOISA) for internal review of our response to your original request
with our reference 2017-2018 4002. We received your request for review on
23 January 2018. In accordance with FOISA I am replying to your request
for review with this email within the statutory time for compliance.

In your request for review you asked:

I am writing to request an internal review of National Library of
Scotland's handling of my FOI request 'Gender balance on public boards in
Scotland'.

I fear I may not have been clear about the information I was looking for
with regard to median pay in my original request.

I am looking for separate current median pay information for the NLS
broken down by gender, rather than an aggregate figure for both male and
female employees.  To be clear:

- What is the current median pay of women employees at NLS?

- What is the current median pay of male employees at NLS?

I am pleased to provide the information requested as follows:

o The median pay of female employees is £23,866
o The median pay of male employees is £23,866

In accordance with s.21(4) of FOISA I confirm the Library’s original
decision, which was to provide the information requested. In this email, I
am pleased to provide this information with modification, as set out
above, namely with a breakdown of the median pay by male and female
employees. The Library’s reason for this decision is that the information
requested is subject to disclosure and not subject to any valid exemption
under FOISA. As stated in your request for internal review, the
information we supplied was in response to our understanding of your
initial request. In your email of 23 January 2018 you clarified the nature
of your request, and we are happy to provide the information requested.

The Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 (FOISA) provides a
framework for further assistance to your request. If you are dissatisfied
with this review, you may ask the Scottish Information Commissioner to
intervene. You may launch an appeal with the Commissioner online at:
[4]www.itspublicknowledge.info/Appeal. If you are unhappy with a decision
made by the Scottish Information Commissioner you may be able to appeal on
a point of law to the Court of Session. For more information please visit:

I hope that this response fully satisfies your request, however please

the Library.
