GDL/CPE and BPTC scholarship statistics

Roedd y cais yn rhannol lwyddiannus.

Dear Under-Treasurer of the Middle Temple,

Please could you release the following data:

For GDL/CPE scholarships:
- the total sum of money available each year which the inn might award
- the total sum of money which the inn in fact awarded in the most recent year for which full data* is available (noting which year this is)
- the highest number of scholarship awards the inn might make
- the actual number of awards the inn made in the most recent year for which full data* is available (noting which year this is)
- the number of applicants the inn received for these scholarships in the most recent year for which full data* is available (noting which year this is)
- information on any significant changes the inn is expecting to happen which would affect these figures in the years to come.

*full data to include that requested in other points - so if, for example, the information on total funds awarded was available for 2008-09 and 2009-10, but the information on total number of awards made was only available for 2008-09, please provide the data for 2008-09 in all cases.

For BPTC scholarships:
- the same data

NB, if data is not available for the years in which the BPTC has been running, please provide equivalent data for BVC scholarships.

Please only include, in all cases, scholarships which would be generally available (so NOT any for which the applicant must fulfil additional criteria, such as being an alumnus of a particular institution, or having a disability, etc).

Yours faithfully,

Giles Fleming

Christa Richmond, Under-Treasurer of the Middle Temple

Dear Mr Fleming,

Thank you for your enquiry.

As the Inn does not award scholarships in its role as Local Authority and is not a school, we have no obligation to reply to your request for information under the Freedom of Information Act. We are happy, however, to supply the information for which you had asked as we regard our scholarship scheme as a very important part of our role and are proud of it.

The annual sum available varies.

For the academic year 2010/11, the Inn awarded

* £99,500 for GDL/CPE scholarships
* £806,250 for BPTC scholarships

The Inn also provided subsidised accommodation to 14 BPTC students, worth £71,000.

It is not possible to give a definitive answer as to the highest number of awards which the Inn might make. Interviewing panels make a decision on who merits a scholarship on the basis of the published criteria and allocate the funds accordingly, taking into account the individual financial circumstances.

For the academic year 2010/11, the Inn awarded

* 25 GDL/CPE scholarships, the highest of which was £8,000.
* 172 BPTC scholarships, the highest of which was £15,000.

For the academic year 2011/12, the total funds available have been increased by £50,000.

Yours sincerely,

Christa Richmond

Dear Christa Richmond,

Apologies for requesting this information through an inappropriate channel, and thank you for responding so helpfully despite that! There's a little more info which I'd be interested in, which is the number of applicants there were for each type of scholarship (GDL and BPTC) in the 2010-11 year.

Thanks for your help so far
Yours sincerely,

Giles Fleming
