GCSE Data Results

We're waiting for Laurence Hothersall to read recent responses and update the status.

Dear Department for Education,

Could you please provide data on GCSE results from 1995/96 to 2005/6, broken down by school, subject, and grade awarded.

Specifically, I would be grateful if you could include the following fields:
- School name
- URN
- year (from 1995/6 - 2005/6)
- number of students entered (for each subject)
- number of students awarded each grade (for each subject)
(In particular, I am looking for the number of entrants and grades awarded, rather than the % pass rate, as is more commonly published.)

I am happy to discuss my request, and accommodate any changes that will make retrieval of data easier, whilst still allowing me to complete my research.

Yours faithfully,

Laurence Hothersall

Dear Laurence,

Re: GCSE and Expenditure Per Student

Thank you for your email received on 1st August 2016, reference number: 2016-0037570. Your request was as follows:

“I am searching for a range of GSCE attainment and achievement statistics and I am hoping you can help me with my request. I am looking for the GSCE and equivalent achievement and attainment results for the dates 1995/6 to 2015/6 in England, Scotland, N.Ireland and Wales. Furthermore, I am interested to acquire data on the expenditure per student, also for the years 1995/6 to 2015/6 in England, Wales, N.Ireland and Scotland for my research. I appreciate it is a lot of data, so please message me if there is an issue and the request cannot be fully satisfied.”

Apologies for our delay in responding to your query.

Department for Education

Dear Laurence,

Re: GCSE results from 1995/96 to 2005/6

Thank you for your request for information, reference number: 2016-0036978. Your request is as follows:

“Could you please provide data on GCSE results from 1995/96 to 2005/6, broken down by school, subject, and grade awarded.

“Specifically, I would be grateful if you could include the following fields:

- School name

- URN

- year (from 1995/6 - 2005/6)

- number of students entered (for each subject)

- number of students awarded each grade (for each subject) (In particular, I am looking for the number of entrants and grades awarded, rather than the % pass rate, as is more commonly published.).“

I have dealt with your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (“the Act”).

The Department holds the information you have requested. However, the Department estimates that the cost of complying with your request would exceed the cost threshold applicable to central Government. This is £600 and represents the estimated cost of one person spending 3½ working days locating, retrieving and extracting the information.

Under section 12 of the Act the Department is therefore not obliged to comply with your request and will not be processing it further.

However, if you were to make a new request for a narrower category of information or limit the scope of your request, the Department may be able to comply with your request within the cost limit, although I cannot guarantee that this will be the case.

It may help if I outline some possible ways of narrowing your request; due to the way that historical information is held the Department may be able to process your request further if it were refined to cover the academic years from 2004 onwards.

Alternatively, you may be able to request pupil level data from the National Pupil Database (NPD), which may enable you to undertake the analysis that you require. To request extracts of the NPD you will need to complete the NPD data request application form and Information security questionnaire. Decisions on whether data can be released are subject to a robust approval process and are based on a detailed assessment of who is requesting the data, the purpose for which it is required, the level and sensitivity of data requested and the arrangements in place to store and handle the data. Further information on the NPD request process can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/national-pupil-databa.... If you have any queries with regards to NPD, you can contact the NPD team using the following e-mail address: [email address]<mailto:[email address]>

If you have any queries about this email, please contact me. Please remember to quote the reference number above in any future communications.

If you are unhappy with the way your request has been handled, you should make a complaint to the Department by writing to me within two calendar months of the date of this letter. Your complaint will be considered by an independent review panel, who were not involved in the original consideration of your request.

If you are not content with the outcome of your complaint to the Department, you may then contact the Information Commissioner’s Office.

Yours sincerely,

Thanks,

Sam
