Dear University of Reading,
I am writing you for a Request of information, under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) on the following topics: “From which government authorities, NGO or Private companies do universities receive funding’ for research?”, a research based on information of public interest, for journalism purposes.
Can you provide information to the following questions?
1) What is the total amount that the university received in funds for research, industrial consultancy fees and/or funded researches from government, NGO or private companies in the last five financial years (from 2013 till 2017)? The information should be broken down by organization or company name, year per year (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017), in a CSV format, if possible.
2) A portfolio statement for the funds the university has investments in. If you do not have a copy of it, can you provide a list of funds and corresponding management companies? Details should be broken down year by year, for the last financial years (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017), provided in a CSV format, if possible.
3) Can you provide details of research projects (such as executive summary and details of reports’ publication, university department and researchers’ names) of projects whose funds exceed £50,000, in the same period of time (2013-2017)?

Dear Mr Pani,
We are writing to advise you that it has been necessary to refuse this
request under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
We estimate that compliance with your request would exceed the appropriate
costs limit established by section 12 of the Freedom of information Act
2000; this is currently set at £450 (or 18 hours work) by virtue of the
[1]Freedom of Information and Data Protection (Appropriate Limit and Fees)
Regulations 2004. Our estimate has considered the time it would take to
determine whether we hold the information and then to locate, retrieve and
extract it.
We estimate that to determine whether we hold ‘details of research
projects of projects whose funds exceed £50,000’ for years requested 20013
through to 2017, then to locate, retrieve, and extract that information
would take longer than 18 hours to complete. The primary reason for this
is that to provide details of each research project which exceeds £50,000
in funding, for the four years specified is not recorded centrally in an
easily searchable, aggregated format. In order to locate the data
requested we would have to manually interrogate a very large volume of
records across various databases and files within the requested period, to
identify research projects with over £50,000 funds and extract the
executive summary for each. For the time periods requested this would
involve manually retrieving and searching through hundreds of research
project records.
We are sorry we cannot provide the requested information and under S.16
(duty to provide help and assistance), we would like to advise you that
for Research Council grants information, including abstracts, is available
on Gateway to Research which is available to anyone to look at. Accessible

We are also able to advise that information in respect of limb two is
exempt information on the basis of the following FOIA exemptions: s.21 -
