Frith Lane Mill Hill

Response to this request is long overdue. By law, under all circumstances, Barnet Borough Council should have responded by now (details). You can complain by requesting an internal review.

Dear Barnet Borough Council,

Plase will you tell me why no Zebra Crossing was put back at Mill Hill when the road works were completed, making it an extremely dangerous road to cross? Instead an island was placed much further up that really serves no purpose as one still has to cross Frith Lane.

This means that people in Mill Hill have to cross Frith Lane to go to the shops and this is very dangerous, traffic comes from all directions extremely fast and it's not safe, it's a wonder there haven't been any deaths there on that sharp bend where the traffic is upon you and you end up waiting, or you risk it to cross the road. Surely it shouldn't be this way?

Just what was the point of taking away a Zebra Crossing that made crossing the road safely, especially for the people that live close by who I see struggle to cross the road, they take their lives in their hands on a daily basis.

Are you going to put the Zebra Crossing back where it was?

Yours faithfully,
Heather Soper

Dear Daisy Nash,

The Zebra Crossing was on Bittacy Hill, this meant the majority of people, whether crossing this road to get a bus or crossing the road for something else, was SAFE.

Since the Zebra Crossing was taken away people have no choice but to either cross the Bittacy Hill road or cross Frith Lane and both are dangerous.

The Zebra Crossing was taken away a few years ago when works on the road were carried out. I think the feint lines are still there.

I do not understand how you don't know anything about it as it is Barnet Council's Highway which is a part of Mill Hill Hill Ward.

Something really needs to done about this because there is bound to be an accident one day and I would prefer to have it averted. The Zebra Crossing was put there for a reason, for Safety, what you 'say' you care about.

Yours sincerely,

Heather Soper

Dear Ms Soper,

I have forwarded your response onto the Officer investigating this FOI.

They have asked if you could confirm the exact location, looking on Google
maps its a long road so we need to know more precisely where the zebra
crossing once was, near a landmark or street number?

Kind Regards

Dear Daisy Nash,

It's opposite houses, opposite a sweet shop which is on the corner where traffc turns right into Frith Lane, so it's very close. A friend used to live in the houses, she would ask me to go across the road ( using the Zebra Crossing) to get a few bits of shopping for her, it was easy. Now one takes their life in their hands to cross the road and I'm surprised there's been no accidents there, none that I know of.
When I left her I would again cross the Zebra Crossing to get to the 382 bus. Now people have to walk quite a way up the hill to cross the road with an island to get across; the problem there is you have to cross Frith lane to get to the Bus Stop. Cars are coming from all directions; Frith Lane is a very busy road, and all because some bright spark moved the Zebra Crossing. So dangerous.

Yours sincerely,

Heather Soper

Dear Barnet Borough Council,

Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews.

I am writing to request an internal review of Barnet Borough Council's handling of my FOI request 'Frith Lane Mill Hill'.
Barnet have told me that [my eyes are deceiving me], that the Zebra Crossing that was there in mill hill before the works were done, was not a Zebra Crossing.
I don't know what else you'd call it, traffic stopped for people to cross the road - a Zebra Crossing!

This Zebra Crossing - the wide white lines are still there albeit faded now, made it safe to cross a busy Road, Bittacy Hill, but it's been taken away and an island put further up... and that'd be fine if it didn't mean one had to cross an even busier road with cars coming down fast and into the road from left and right, this road is Frith Lane and you take your life in your hands to cross it.

I used to shop at Waitrose safely, going and coming, and had to cross Frith Lane to get to the bus stop, there's no other way. Before, I used to cross at the Zebra crossing to get to the bus stop. I don't shop at Waitrose anymore.
How there has never been a serious accident at the junction of Frith Lane I will never know, I believe it's an accident waiting to happen.
I am Not happy with Barnet's Response, far from it.

Dear Ms Soper

I write further to your request for an internal review of the attached
response to your request for information.

Your request for review

Barnet have told me that that the Zebra Crossing that was there in Mill
Hill before the works were done, was not a Zebra Crossing.

I have undertaken the internal review and the outcome of my review is set
out below.

Response

Thank you for your request for internal review.  I am taking this out of
the internal review process as this request for a new crossing at Frith
Lane junction with Bittacy Hill is better handled as a service request
rather than a request for information.

The Highways Service has advised the following.

Our Design Team has checked its list of Highways assets maintained.

As mentioned in our previous response a traffic island was removed during
2017 to improve traffic flow near the Frith Lane / Bittacy Hill Roundabout
as part of Millbrook Park Regeneration Works. This was not a Zebra
Crossing.

Highways service has advised that the only Zebra Crossing between Frith
Lane and Holders Hill Circus was renewed recently, a few months back, see
attached photo.

There are a number of other Zebra Crossings throughout Bittacy Hill at
prime locations where there is high pedestrian flow (i.e. near Holders
Hill Circus outside the shops , Near Mill Hill Station, Near Inglis Way
junction etc.)

Any new requests for crossings will need to be assessed based on criteria
and funding availability by our Design Team. We will include your request
for zebra crossing at Frith Lane junction with Bittacy Hill to be
considered alongside other requests received to be assessed for inclusion
in a future work programme.

For traffic and parking related schemes we have an annual programme of
work which is agreed each year by the council's Environment Committee.
This means that any new requests for work are unlikely to be funded in the
current financial year but can be considered for inclusion in future years
programmes subject to meeting criteria and funding availability.

Please direct any future correspondence or requests on this matter to the
Design Team, email: [1][email address]

I hope you find the above helpful and I am sorry for any inconvenience and
delay caused in not handling your request under the correct process.

Yours sincerely

Dear Richard Carter,

3 Things here... firstly, the following makes no sense to me:

1. ''Barnet have told me that that the Zebra Crossing that was there in Mill
Hill before the works were done, was not a Zebra Crossing. ''

Either it was or it wasn't, Duh !!!

Secondly: As mentioned in our previous response a traffic island was removed during
2017 to improve traffic flow near the Frith Lane / Bittacy Hill Roundabout
as part of Millbrook Park Regeneration Works. This was not a Zebra
Crossing.

It was Not a traffic Island they removed but a Striped Crossing; a Zebra Crossing; you step out on it and the traffic stops, isn't a striped crossing a Zebra Crossing? ! Having crossed this road myself I know just what it was like to cross it - SAFE

Thirdly: As mentioned in our previous response a traffic island was removed during
2017 to improve traffic flow near the Frith Lane / Bittacy Hill Roundabout
as part of Millbrook Park Regeneration Works. This was not a Zebra
Crossing.

I AM referring to the Crossing, White Striped, (Zebra) ''during
2017 to improve traffic flow near the Frith Lane / Bittacy Hill Roundabout
as part of Millbrook Park Regeneration Works.'' The Stripes of White are Feint Now due to time lapse.

Lastly: There was No Island removed, the Zebra Crossing was removed near the Frith Lane/Bittacy Hill roundabout, an Island was put further up, towards Waitrose, meaning that anyone who wants the 382 BUS, Still has to cross busy and dangerous Frith Lane - Because the Zebra Crossing was taken Away, which is what my post/Complaint was about.

I was making the point that to take the Zebra Crossing away which they Did, forcing those who wanted the 382 Bus/shops to put their lives in danger crossing Frith Lane, and I am right. There is Nowhere that is safe to cross.

All I can say is put the crossing back, Make Crossing the Roads SAFE, it made No SENSE to Remove it, unless they're waiting for a bad accident to happen? Now I have voiced and put my complaint in writing I will be very willing to come forward if such an accident occurs.

It was unbelievably stupid to remove the Zebra Crossing.

Yours sincerely,

Heather Soper

Dear Richard Carter,

Barnet say anything, this is common knowedge.

Yours sincerely,

Heather Soper

Dear Richard Carter,

The response for my request is long overdue. By law you should have responded by now. In essence I am saying that by taking away the crossing you have made crossing the road, dangerous.; traffic used to stop to let people cross the road safely, there is no road to cross safely now and by putting an island further up the road you are making people cross Frith Lane, an even more dangerous road to cross. Health and Safety seems non existent. I would like to know why the crossing was not put back, because there seems to be no good reason for it.

Yours sincerely,

Heather Soper
