FOI request: Number of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller students

We're waiting for Basia Cummings to read a recent response and update the status.

To whom it may concern,

I am writing to make an open government request for all the information to which I am entitled under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. In order to assist you with this request, I am outlining my enquiry as specifically as possible. If however this request is too wide or unclear, I would be grateful if you would contact me as I understand that under the Act, you are required to advise and assist requesters.

I would like to find out the number of people who define their ethnicity as Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (or equivalent) who are accepted to study at the university each academic year. I would also like to discover whether these figures have changed over the past 10 years.

As such, could the following information please be made available:

a) The number of people who define their ethnicity as Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (or equivalent) who applied to study at the university each year for entry in the academic years 2008/2009, 2009/2010, 2010/2011, 2011/2012, 2012/2013, 2013/2014, 2014/2015, 2015/2016, 2016/2017, 2017/2018, 2018/2019.

b) The overall number of people who applied to study at the university each year for entry in the academic years 2008/2009, 2009/2010, 2010/2011, 2011/2012, 2012/2013, 2013/2014, 2014/2015, 2015/2016, 2016/2017, 2017/2018, 2018/2019. I would like these figures broken down by ethnicity.

c) The number of people who define their ethnicity as Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (or equivalent) who were accepted to study at the university each year for entry in the academic years 2008/2009, 2009/2010, 2010/2011, 2011/2012, 2012/2013, 2013/2014, 2014/2015, 2015/2016, 2016/2017, 2017/2018, 2018/2019.

d) b) The overall number of people accepted to study at the university each year for entry in the academic years 2008/2009, 2009/2010, 2010/2011, 2011/2012, 2012/2013, 2013/2014, 2014/2015, 2015/2016, 2016/2017, 2017/2018, 2018/2019. I would like these figures broken down by ethnicity.

Where possible, I would like all application/ acceptance figures to be broken down by undergraduate/ postgraduate study.

I understand that under the Act, I should be entitled to a response within 20 working days. I would be grateful if you would confirm in writing that you have received this request.

Yours faithfully,

Jasmin Gray

Dear Jasmin,

Many thanks for your email dated 9^th August.  Please see our response
below:

The attached spreadsheet consists of two tabs: tab one is for applicants,
tab two is for accepted applicants.  Each tab shows the data split by
Undergraduates and Postgraduates, it is then broken down by academic year
and the ethnicity declared on the application forms.

NOTES:

1) Please note that we have provided data for the last three academic
years.  For historical data, this information is not in a readily
accessible format and to retrieve this information would exceed the cost
limit proscribed (Section 12 (1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000).

2) We do not have a classification of 'Roma', this would be recorded under
'Gypsy or Traveller'.

3) We have rounded the data as per HESA guidelines to anonymise personal
data, in some instances this will result in a zero return.
