1. I write to request to know does your university carry out animal

2. I request to know how many animals were used in experiments inside the
University of Dundee between the 1st of January 2017  and 31st December
2017

 

The number of regulated procedures under the Animals
(Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 was as follows:

 

Mice - 32725 procedures

Rats -  539 procedures

Frogs - 373 procedures

Hamsters - 12 procedures

 

Please note that the number of regulated procedures does not accord
exactly with number of animals.

 

3. How many animals were held for use in experiments inside University of
Dundee between 1st of January 2017 and the 31st of

December 2017 (if this differs from the above).

 

The number will be broadly similar to that provided above, although a
small number of additional animals will be held pending research in the
near future.

 

4. How many living animals are currently held on University of Dundee
premises for research purposes?

 

This figure is highly variable, but as of writing (30.4.18) 11,232 mice,
16 rats and 473 frogs.

 

5. I request to know what species of animals were used for
these experiments?

6. I request to know the Home Office licence classification for these
experiments in terms of pain, lasting harm, etc. if classified?

 

In 2017, the actual severities of the regulated procedures were recorded
as follows:

 

'Sub-threshold' 25605 (76.1%)

Non-recovery 475 (1.4%)

Mild 5951 (17.7%)

Moderate 1436 (4.3%)

Severe 182 (0.5%)

 

7. I request to know if the animals used were for medical or non-medical
research?

 

Fundamental biological research which may have a medical application in
future.

 

8. I request to know which departments /schools use animals
for experiments?

 

The Schools of Life Sciences and Medicine.
