FOI and fact check- Gypsies, Roma and Travellers

The request was successful.

Dear Durham University,

I am a BBC News journalist working on a story about the experience of Gypsies, Roma and Travellers (GRT) in Higher Education in the UK. The questions I want to fact check have a deadline of this Friday 27 midday. I have sent this to the all of the top 10 universities.

I would like to ask simply:

a) Do you measure how many students who identify as Gypsies, Roma or Travellers attend your university each year?
b) Do you recognise GRT as a group which needs specific outreach programmes?

The FOI, which has a normal deadline of 20 days:
c) Do you have the numbers of students who identify as GRT who attended your university in the last three academic years and their attainment?

Yours faithfully,

Poppy Damon

ACCESS I., University of Durham

Dear Ms Damon

Thank you for your request for information from Durham University.
Colleagues have provided the information below in response to your
questions.

a)           Do you measure how many students who identify as Gypsies,
Roma or Travellers attend your university each year?

“Gypsy or Irish Traveller” is one of the HESA Ethnicity categories and is
therefore available as an option for students to choose when declaring
their ethnicity.

b)           Do you recognise GRT as a group which needs specific outreach
programmes?

The University does not have any specific outreach programmes targeted at
this group.

c)           Do you have the numbers of students who identify as GRT who
attended your university in the last three academic years and their
attainment?

The University has had five students in total who have declared their
ethnicity as GRT.
