Dear Corporate Services,

Thank you for your response. Why did the work that was done in 2008 have to be repeated only two years later in April/May/June 2010?

Yours sincerely,

Robin Ford

The above answers were:

Following internal consultations we are able to reply to your enquiry as follows.

Following significant washout along a 500m section of floodbank at Postwick Marshes by the November 2007 surge event we installed some crest piling to prevent regular overtopping of river water on spring tides. The work was not paid for separately; it was covered by an annual charge that we pay our contractor for maintenance works throughout the Broads. The maintenance charge for the financial year 2008/09 was
£734,000.

The work we have done at Postwick in recent years has been the minimum maintenance required which will secure the existing flood defence. We have recently had to replace some lightweight sheet piling that was installed in 2008, this is because it had not
performed satisfactorily.

This has been done under our contract with Broadland Environmental Services Ltd and at no additional cost to the Environment Agency.
