Dear Mr Kilburn

Case 1487640

Thank you for your enquiry received on 12 August 2022.

NATS, being an air navigation service provider (ANSP), does not keep a
record of delayed or cancelled flights and is unable to provide details of
individual flights. Any decision to cancel a flight is that of the airline
concerned and you should therefore contact your airline.

You could also seek guidance from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) which
is responsible for regulating commercial air transport operators in
respect of their obligations to air passengers, including with regards to
severely delayed or cancelled flights.

Flights can be delayed for many reasons, many of which are out of ANSPs’
control, such as weather.

In recent months, travel restrictions to Russian and Ukrainian airspace
have introduced additional complexities to air traffic operations and
management across Europe. Regulations and operating rules have been
introduced to manage the air restrictions across Europe. In practice,
managing airspace closure across Russia and Ukraine means the re-routing
of aircraft which has resulted in there being more flights operating
through less airspace.

NATS’ regulated function is responsible for the provision of en route air
traffic control services to aircraft operating in UK controlled airspace.
NATS handles 22.9% of European traffic but to date this year has only been
responsible for 2.49% of delay. In July, 98% of flights experienced no
delay attributable to NATS.

With kind regards

Caroline
