Firstsite, Mercury Theatre and Arts Centre Earnings

The request was successful.

Dear Colchester Borough Council,
According to the expenses published during the month of September CBC paid £162,122 to the Arts Centre, First Site and the Mercury Theatre in grant money.
How much did these three venues earn in that period?
What was their net contribution to the local economy?

Yours faithfully,
Christopher Lee

Dear Mr Lee

I am now able to respond to your Freedom of Information request logged on
2nd November under reference 151102024107.

Annual grants by Colchester Borough Council (CBC) to the three
organisations are in 2015/16 as follows:

Mercury Theatre                   £221,850

Firstsite                                  £127,925

Colchester Arts Centre          £ 63,650

In addition a sum of £10,000 was paid to the Arts Centre towards the cost
of staging the Colchester Comedy Festival.

The three organisations are not run by the Council which therefore does
not hold details of their income during September.

In October of this year an Economic Impact Analysis conducted by a private
research consultancy to HM Treasury Green Book standards found the
collective gross visitor spend for the Colchester economy across the three
organisations to be £5.47m in 2014/15.

The report investigated the contribution of the three organisations and
with them the Signals Media Arts Centre to the local economy.  In addition
to visitor income the key findings summarised the collective economic
impact across the four organisations as:

·         Employment: 159 FTE jobs, 122 of which are estimated to be in
Colchester.

·         Procurement: more than £1.6 million, of which over £700,000
spent in Colchester.

The attached document outlines further the economic contribution made by
the arts in Colchester.

Yours sincerely

Mike Fawcett
